New York (87-72) lost for the 11th time in 16 games and reducedtheir lead over second-place Philadelphia in the National LeagueEast to one-half game. The Phillies (86-72) are playing theAtlanta Braves Thursday night. The defeat kept the Mets' magic number for clinching theirsecond straight National League East title at four. New Yorkhas had sole possession of first place since May 16, a stringthat would end should Philadelphia beat the Braves.
