Its a mix of college prestige, how you perform at the school, your degree, and how you can market yourself. Counselors who are going to generalize like that are worthless in taking advice from. I didn't listen to anything my high school counselor said, because he was quite frankly not a very smart man. Those UCLA and Stanford graduates could have jobs. Maybe not a job in their field, but they could have jobs.
