There is no question that all our rookies will be overpaid (if we can do that). As a matter of fact, I can't recall a single young player, who didn't get overpaid. Even Richardson was overpaid when he was signed, and fortunately, he developed enough to warrent his contract. And, it's known fact that the bad team has to overpay to keep players anyway. However, things are developing very interestingly in this offseason. Instead of traditional 6 years contract, all players with rookie contracts are starting to sign 3 years contract, starting from big 4 to Gooden and some other guys. At this rate, 3 years extension after the rookie contract may be a norm. Of course, we are one year late on Dunleavy signing so...

Why is there that trend in shorter contracts? Is it to earn money later or is it because players and teams may agree on parting ways in the near future? I mean if there's a 3 or 4 year deal, regardless of money involved, it would help a team find some trade because of expiring deal or a player could want out and wouldn't be tied to some lengthy thing like Foyle, Fisher, or Dunleavy's silly deals. 6 years for freakin' role players... awful...

First, in most of cases, teams never like long term contract. For James, Wade, Anthony and Bosh type, they can get more money after their 6th years due to CBA and how X number of years of veterans can get more money like Shaq or Garnett. It's actually a kind of gamble, because they are sure that after 6th year, they are still a max player. If injury or anything happens, they may lose roughly 50 mils. It also makes teams to sign Gooden and his kind of players easier, in other word, unfulfilled talents. Teams can ask them to prove their worth in 3 years because James and those type of players are also willing to take 3 years.

Of course, it does make our situation slightly worse, because now, nobody will take 6 years contracts like Dunleavy or Murphy's 5 years contract. Can you believe that the day James, Wade, Melo and Bosh's contracts end, we still will have Dunleavy for two more years? We saw number of bad contracts for last 10+ years, but for various reasons, Dunleavy's extension is the worst by far...

We could have signed Dunleavy to 15 mil or less... it takes a really ignorant GM to not know what restricted free agent means.

    Thanks Kwan.

Man, I'm really peeved about who the top guys are hiring to run their club... They keep getting guys with no process or no experience or no insight/creativity or no vision towards building a winning team. We're not even seeing the steps towards improvement and the GM is most responsible because he holds all the power. A team with a moderately rich owner should have management be able to pull together a winning team. Look at small market clubs like Phoenix and San Antonio... This is ridiculous.
