This natural desire to win and innate competitiveness that most athletes in any sport have is only the tip of the iceberg. Most of the people reading this article probably are not professional athletes. At least I’m assuming that Fight! Magazine can get this to more houses than mine and Dan Henderson’s, but think about if after a fight that I lost I said, “hey that guy had a roll of quarters in his glove!” Now even if it was true, it doesn’t matter, unless the ref pulls out the stack of George Washington’s from his hand and it is broadcast in high definition on every big screen in the arena. I just sound like a whiny bitch, and he got away with the whole thing, and makes me look like an even bigger sissy, for first of all, LOSING, second of all crying foul after the fact.
This time an anonymous MEGA arena, in a mega city, in front of a mega crowd, in a mega show, for what was then mega money to me. The stakes are much higher this time, and I had done my best to prepare for this single fight, even going so far as to NOT have a wild sex party the night before the fight, so that I could improve my mental focus. After a rough first round, I met in the center for round 2 and somewhere got taken down. “No biggie, my guard is good, he won’t hurt me here, and maybe I can pull off the submission, get a “Dumbass of the Night” award or something. While locked in my tight guard, I noticed that for some reason I was have trouble keeping my opponent’s head down. I practiced shirtless with my great training partners, and never had this much trouble keeping a guy from punching me. Was this guy uber strong or something? No exactly. After a couple more stiff elbows to my grillpiece, I felt the familiar slick that I would get every day at kickboxing practice on my nose and eyes, only it was on my opponents neck, now up 2 rounds, Vaseline!
Greasy bastard, I thought. Of course I yelled to the ref, “Hey! He is greased up!” but much like anyone else watching me get pounded, he didn’t give a damn, and replied with “He’s ok!” Followed by another smash to the face. Yeah, ok for HIM, but I’m taking a beating over here and can’t hold onto the bastard.
Did I ever bitch about it afterwards? Nope. Why? What’s the point? Would it put the toothpaste back in the tube? No. As far as everyone saw, I lost the fight, fair and square. Would it have made a difference if he wasn’t greased up? Maybe, but honestly probably not. He was the better man that night, plain and simple. He bent the rules, not broke them, and when you get away with it, it isn’t called cheating.

Now, supposedly, a report is surfacing that says Sean Sherk complained about GSP being greasy during their fight years back, and Matt Serra has also complained.

yeah, complaining about grease is the lamest thing ever when you consider how sweaty and sometimes bloody these guys get. I don't know if it ever occured to BJ but maybe he just couldnt keep down GSP. As for those other guys complaining, I think theyre just trying to save face, Matt Serra could of been the greasy one and GSP STILL would of taken his ass down and knee him into oblivion.

From what I understand they're upset with GSP's corner man and not GSP himself. It's against the rules to rub vaseline on the body and apparently this corner man has a history of doing it.

I'm sure BJ Penn would be the first to tell you he got his ass kicked by GSP and isn't making any excuses about it.

Anyone find the statement by BJ's coaches about their approach to this fight? They wanted him to fight off his back.

If you did watch the fight, BJ's legs kept slipping off of GSP's back. Doesn't change the fact he got his ass kicked.

Matt Hughes has come out and said that GSP was slippery the second and third times they fought (both losses for Hughes... imagine that) as well.

Serra/Sherk/Mayhem is all speculation, and no word from Fitch/Koscheck/Parisyan yet.

It is extremely unlikely that they would be able to grease GSP all these times. Not only is he checked backstage when he gets his hands taped, he is checked before entering the octagon, and then supervised throughout the fight and the breaks between rounds.

Just because someone is slippery doesn't mean they are covered in grease. A sweaty, muscular man without body hair is probably as hard to grab onto as the greased up deaf guy.

No one is trying to save face. I guarantee none of these fighters would use grease as an excuse for their loss. I guarantee every single one of them would tell you they got their ass kicked because GSP was the better fighter. They're trying to call attention to something that is obviously becoming a problem.

All this talk about vaseline has got me thinking. are fighters allowed to pour water on themselves? I think I've seen it happen once or twice but I forget whether it was before, during or after the fight. I would imagine water would have a similar effect.

BJ Penn talks too much... even during the UFC:94 primer, he said that GSP is a quitter. LOL... Look who couldn't even answer the doctor

i see trainers pour water or the fighters themself do it.. its something a trainer does to wake up their fighter after maybe a big knockdown in that round or beating he took.. i could be wrong though..

as for saving face or whatnot.. i guess we'll have to see what the other fighters have to say.. fitch.. kos.. etc. i just hate the fact that gsp won that match pretty much outright.. and on his biggest day he has to deal with greasing allegations.. ah well.

yeah they're allowed to do it. It's to kool them off and help get their core temperature down, just like the ice bags. It's not as slippery because water is like sweat and most of the fighters are already sweating. Vaseline is much more slippery.

No that being said I was there at the UFC and saw Bjs legs slipping down whenever he tried to use the high guard. Around that time is when GSP really started to do heavy damage to Bj. Everyone in Vegas knew about the vaseline after the fight and was calling BS on GSP because it wasnt only once during that fight did they have to take away the vaseline from his cornerman. I believe Chuck was screaming about it in the middle of the fight.

After a dominating victory over B.J. Penn at UFC 94, Georges St. Pierre is clearly the better fighter. GSP left no doubt. And yet now there is, thanks to one of his cornermen, Phil Nurse. It's pretty clear by watching the video that Nurse had some Vaseline on his hands when he rubbed St. Pierre's shoulders, back and chest between the first and second rounds.

Why is that a big deal in mixed martial arts? It's significant because of all the grappling and maneuvering that takes place on the ground. St. Pierre was on top of Penn in the second round and the Hawaiian tried several times to shift his legs up to work for a triangle choke or an armbar. Grip and some friction is huge in these cases and a slippery fighter would make it more difficult to lock on one of those holds. Above you can see, Nurse apply Vaseline to GSP's face, then get more Vaseline, then rub his shoulders, arms and back.

Penn's trainer Rudy Valentino told InsideFighting that St. Pierre cheated and the Vaseline thwarted his fighter's strategy:

"To cheat to win is not honorable. Why need another edge? Our gameplan was on the ground, not striking because we knew Georges had good kicks. We planned to work off the back."

Valentino says they warned the Nevada State Athletic Commission before the fight alleging that St. Pierre did it before their meeting in 2006 and that Matt Serra's camp claimed the same thing happened in Serra's second fight against GSP.

Greg Jackson, GSP's trainer hurt his reputation according to Valentino:

"I respect Greg Jackson but to do something like that, his integrity has been compromised."

Jackson told his side of the story to MMAWeekly:

"In between rounds, you always want to put on vaseline on (a fighter’s face). So Phil Nurse put all the Vaseline on his face, so his hands might have had a miniscule amount left over from that, when he went around the side and rubbed a little point on his back, and tapped on his chest."

Watching the scenarios (1, 2, 3), show Nurse did more than tap the chest and rub a little point on GSP's back.

Jackson chalked all of this up to an overreaction by the NSAC:

"At that point, somebody in the audience thought we were greasing George down, and ran over and told the commission that we were greasing his body down. The commission came in and said ‘you can’t grease him down,’ which didn’t work. They said ‘you’re putting Vaseline on his back,’ and Phil’s like, ‘oh, there might be a little on my fingers, but it wasn’t intentional at all, and of course they wiped it right off and it was gone, so it wasn’t a factor in the fight at all."

"The Commission" was actually NSAC executive director Keith Kizer. He bolted into the cage when he saw Nurse doing the same thing between the second and third rounds. Cage Writer spoke with Kizer after the fight and he was still steaming, saying that the rubbing of the back with Vaseline was completely inappropriate. But he was unsure if it had been done between the first and second.

UFC president Dana White also thought it was a serious violation:

"I saw the commission jump up there and flip out," said White. "They said one of the guys was rubbing Vaseline on Georges' back in between rounds. It was one and two, I think. I personally didn't see it, the commission did. And that's about as illegal as you can get... I'm sure the commission is going to deal (with it)."

White didn't believe that it affected the outcome of the fight but he re-stated that illegal is illegal:

"You could have put Vaseline on from head to toe, that wasn't the point, the point was you don't do it. It's illegal. The guy who did it needs to be punished, it's not (St. Pierre's) fault. The question is what happens to a guy that does that. You've got to put the smack down on him. He should lose his license."

Ultimately, did the use of the Vaseline win the fight for St. Pierre? No. But Penn's camp does have a right to complain.

St. Pierre should be getting props for being the better conditioned fighter, designing and executing the perfect gameplan. The way he wore down Penn in the first round by holding his left leg up on three occasions with the threat of a single-leg takedown, was brilliant. It allowed him takedown a tired Penn with ease in each of the next three rounds. More importantly, GSP was able to pass guard and shift between full guard and side control as if he were fighting a first-year jiu-jitsu student. Now Penn, other fighters who dislike St. Pierre and fans may call for an asterisk on his dominant victory.

I wish they would just fight again. Like tomorrow, and GSP they have someone from the comission constantly watching GSP's corner. That way GSP can beat BJ down again and we can move on.

^^ Its funny you say that.

My question to you is this. How can a damn experienced cornerman unknowingly grease his fighter for two consecutive rounds and call it unintentional. Although Im a Penn fan, I initially thought BJ just lost. I was down with that result. Oh well, it happens and this is MMA. But now I have 2nd thoughts and you can blame GSP's cornerman for it.

Although GSP won that fight, it will be forever tainted due to this issue. Nurse continues to play dumb when the more and more I read into it, the more and more I suspect he knew what he was doing all along.

The greasing may not have changed the outcome but the fact is GREASING is GREASING and it is cheating. No matter how you look at it. Why would we need a second fight if the guys in his corner can't corner him correctly and honestly...

I don't really know about these images, there has been so many gifs and none has shown this particular sequence of events where he goes from face, to hand, then to the shoulders. If it actually happened in this sequence why isnt't it in GIF format?
