Re: Grease-gate [update: BJ Penn is a compulsive liar] I didn't think it would change the outcome of the fight either, but that is besides the point. Cheating is cheating. Bottomline. The win is tainted no matter how you look at it. I've moved on. BJ should just stay at 155 where I know he's so much better, but it sucks that the fight was fought that way instead of fairly.
Re: Grease-gate [update: BJ Penn is a compulsive liar] Whatever makes you sleep at night BJ. You still got your ass handed to you on a dinner plate.
The win is not tainted. In the eyes of BJ fans it is tainted, but I'd like to see who else felt it was tainted.
that video is horseshit. Where BJ was placing his legs is NOT where the trainer rubbed GSP with his hands. GSP may just be a guy who sweats a lot. We had a guy on the HS bball team we called slimer. He had a condition that caused him to sweat profusely. He would slip right off you if we were playing pick up ball and he was skins. GSP could be a slippery guy cause he sweats easily.
I watched that video, I am not a trained BJJ black belt or even a white belt but it didnt seem like BJ was throwing his legs places that would stay on GSP's back. It seemed more like they were on the outside of GSP's shoulders which would be easy for him to shrug off.
Trying to find the statements from Chuck Liddell and Frank Mir who were at the fight and were yelling like hell about it. I'll look futher. Even they saw the damn thing and kept screaming about the Vaseline. What the hell is the dude carrying in Vaseline in the ring for anyway? At the fights here on Guam, Vaseline is only applied before entering the ring, and not by the cornermen. around 3:48 of the clip dude completely rubs GSP back and another dude outside the ring sprays water right after...hmmmmm... Come on, its not just BJ Fans talking. The talk was all over the venue immediately after the UFC event. By both GSP and BJ fans as well as other fighters.
The part of the video with the corner man trying to hide the vaseline in his pocket was pretty alarming. He should be suspended and fined for it. I know they put the onus on the fighter to responsible for his corner men, but I'd give GSP the benefit of the doubt and not hold him accountable. When you're in the moment the last thing you're thinking about is monitoring your corner men. I also don't think it had a major impact on the end result, I think BJ's strategy and approach to the fight was completely wrong and GSP having a 20lb weight advantage was too, much to overcome. He pretty much manhandled BJ and when two guys with equal talent get in the ring the bigger, stronger guy is usually going to win. I think BJ should have swarmed GSP and made it an ugly fight.
Here is GSP's camps formal response to the complaint (including letters from Greg Jackson, Kru Phil Nurse, their holistic consultant, and John Danaher). The last letter, by Danaher (GSP's grappling coach) is extremely compelling. Seems he has experience in written debates. He systematically lists and debunks every possible angle by which their corner could be accused of cheating. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/sports_blog/files/nsac_response.pdf
I agree Shape. However, to say this fight should not be tainted is BS. Fact is, greasing is greasing, accidental or not. It should have not been done and his cornerman should have been more professional about it. Especially in a title fight.
Its ILLEGAL. Where do I need to post it so you understand that? I dont think it would have changed the outcome and I think BJ just got overwhelmed and lost, but the fact is what was done was ILLEGAL. Thats like you saying "GO AHEAD AND GREASE, because YOU WOULD HAVE DOMINTATED THE FIGHT ANYWAY. KEEP GREASING AS LONG AS YOUR DOMINATING AND PEOPLE KNOW IF WONT CHANGE THE OUTCOME". The fight was unfair regardless of what the outcome could have been. Thats the bottomline. I'd rather have BJ not bitch so much about it because it does let him look like a little ass, but hey, he has some grounds for doing so...
No he doesn't. He would have some grounds if he backed up all his shit talking. He would have some grounds to bitch if he was competitive. GSP wiped the octagon with BJ. There are no grounds for BJ to bitch because it didn't have an impact on the fight.
I wont argue on it with you any futher because your not listening to the fact that the GREASE was ILLEGAL. You dismiss it and move on to the simple fact that GSP wiped the floor with BJ. I agree totally, but I dont agree that they're just going to dismiss the GREASING INCIDENT. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE. It isn't fair. GSP goes unpunished when it is clear the CORNER had Vaseline in the octagon and in his pockets? UNBELIEVABLE for you to think that. now, thats a crock of shit.
Fighters allegedly knew about his greasing before and nobody called him out on it. Why stop if nobody calls you out on it? The commissions have never noticed it before, so it obviously wasn't a big deal before. From now on it'll be looked at and monitored closely, but his win shouldn't be tainted.
The allegations is one thing. I'd dismiss that. It holds no grounds. Seeing the VASELINE on tape and in the pockets and hands of the corner in the Octagon is another!!!!!
I still don't think that taints the win because it didn't make a difference in the fight. If it would've made a difference, it clearly would have made difference in the fight then it would have easily been a tainted win.
Of course it taints the win. GSP should be pissed at his corner man for putting him in this predicament. It would be similar to Cubs baseball team winning 10-0 and Sammy Sosa hits a homerun to make it 11-0 with a corked bat. His homerun obviously didn't change the outcome of the game, but it still taints the victory.
Thanks Shape. Thats exactly my point. I thought I was the only one hallucinating that the judge knocked the jar out of the cornermans hand... Sheesh.... lol Rubbing of the back for a breathing technique? BLEH!!!!
