Here you go...

TORONTO -- The Blue Jays appear to be on the verge of adding shortstop David Eckstein. A Major League source would neither confirm nor deny a report on FOXSports.com that indicated Toronto was close to striking a deal with the free agent.

Eckstein, who took home World Series MVP honors for the Cardinals in 2006, would likely move into the Blue Jays' starting shortstop role, which is currently filled by veteran John McDonald. Toronto signed McDonald to a two-year, $3.8 million contract in September, and the club gave no hint that it was looking for a new shortstop this winter.

A team source told MLB.com that the Blue Jays discussed potentially adding Eckstein earlier this week, but he also could not confirm that the club was near reaching a deal with the shortstop.

With Eckstein in the fold, McDonald -- better known for his defensive gems than his bat -- would probably return to a reserve role. The 31-year-old Eckstein would also be a candidate to move into the leadoff spot for the Blue Jays, who cycled through various players in that spot last year.

Last season, Eckstein posted a .309 average with three home runs, 31 RBIs and 10 stolen bases for St. Louis, which signed him to a three-year deal worth $10.25 million prior to the 2005 campaign. Eckstein, who is a two-time World Series champion, owns a career on-base percentage of .351.

Terms for the Eckstein's potential contract with the Blue Jays were not immediately known.

TORONTO (Ticker) -- David Eckstein apparently will bring his scrappy style North of the Border.

The Toronto Blue Jays reached an agreement with Eckstein on a one-year contract Thursday.

Pending a physical, the deal is worth $4.5 million, according to a report on the Blue Jays' web site.

Eckstein, 31, batted a career-high .309 with three home runs, 31 RBI and 10 stolen bases for the St. Louis Cardinals last season.

A two-time World Series champion, Eckstein has a career average of .286 in seven seasons with the Cardinals and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

A two-time All-Star, the veteran shortstop was the 2006 World Series MVP when he batted .364 in St Louis' five-game series victory over the Detroit Tigers. He also helped the Angels win the World Series in 2002.

Eckstein, known for a hard-charging style that made him a huge fan favorite, was not offered salary arbitration by the Cardinals this offseason, making him a free agent.
