I care for the franchise. I am a Blazer fan. Hence my noticing red flags about the guy that many posters were calling a once-in-a-generation talent. I personally don't care if Greg wants to drink DeWar's or Johnny Red by the bottle, bump lines, and hump 50 hookers a night. Then again, it's not my decision on whether he should be re-signed, and if it were, the things that concerned me and still concern me would play a role in a new contract for him. It's really not that hard to understand, is it? You seem to consistently conflate separate thoughts and then try to throw them all into one point of view that you assign to somebody. My point personally is that Oden drinking is no big deal. My point in terms of the Blazers is that there is some risk outside of basketball and injuries that I would consider if I were the GM.
You forgot to add this part to your cut/paste. Perhaps he never literally said he needed to cut back, although I had heard otherwise even without him saying it. He did say that he was done doing it, though. That he has already (allegedly) walked back from points #1 and #2 make me question his sincerity. As I said, though, if he wants to have a good time, I don't care. The Portland night clubs need business, too. As an aside, what was your former screen name here?
That whole fuzzy thing . .. not the best analogy. We know who is in the picture so who cares if it is fuzzy? A reporter said that when Oden was asked what he liked most about Canada, he said the drinking age. Simple little comment that generated lots of talk on the board. Many saying you can't read into something as flimsy as that. I argued that with his fondness to parties, that comment was a red flag. Later Oden come out and admits he should change his drinking and eating. Not saying I had something solid back then, only knowing what I know I had a hunch. Hunch was right. Nothing wrong with giving opinions around here based on little we have (watch the opinions about what Nate teaches eventhough none of us really know) OK for you to say I don't buy it (BTW-how do you feel about it, all I have read is you telling posters why their opinions are flawed) . . . but it seems like you want to riducule some who want to go out on a limb and have an opinion about something.
Whats dude doing wasting time getting a license? He needs to be rehabbing! Plus he has more than enough $$$ to just have a personal driver. I know KD wouldn't waste time on such trivial things... He is amazing.
No duh he didn't say it, because it wasn't true. It was crap Quick said to pad out his story. Quick contradicts himself in his own article as I mentioned in my previous post. You're holding him up to standards he never set for himself. They were set by Jason Quick, who, again - contradicted himself in his own article. How can he fail those two points when he never promised or implied that he would follow them? In fact just a month after that article Oden had this to say to ESPN: Also I've never had another acct here. I've mainly hung out @ RealGM, but have decided to expand my patronage of other fine board establishments. RealGM Profile
So, I read in your quote from Oden that he did say he was cutting back on alcohol, just not giving it up completely. Again, what's your point? How does it relate to me years ago thinking that alcohol may become an issue with him? Why did he cut back?
My opinion is that he's a young guy who goes out and has a drink here and there. Maybe he goes to parties from time to time. I don't question his rehab efforts & rather attribute his continued inability to play as a result of his body mechanics rather than any issue with eating too much fast food or drinking. I feel as though I'd need some hard evidence that Oden has a drinking problem, such as an arrest, his teammates or the team coming out and saying he has an issue, him getting checked into a rehab facility or maybe multiple 3rd party reports that "Oden was smashed and barfing outside Club [x] last night".
I think his point is making sure that you're not attributing hypocrisy to Oden based on Quick's reporting... not based on what Oden himself has said. If it's NOT his point, then I'll make it. Because you're holding Oden up to a false standard. Ed O.
So someone who normally has two beers a week decides to go to one beer a week. That must mean they had a drinking problem in the past because they reduced their consumption? Perhaps he got burnt out on going out to clubs or parties, maybe he decided he wanted to focus on something else? Just because you reduce your consumption of something doesn't mean you had a problem with it before.
I'm not holding Oden up to any standard, other than my own opinion that was formed a few years ago when he talked of turning 21 so he could legally have alcohol. Have you even read what I've posted in this thread, Ed? I don't care if he drinks, bump lines, whatever. It's his life, and his money, and his future. If I was his boss, and if his contract was up, I may think otherwise and hold a different opinion. I would assume that the Blazers are getting some sort of intel on the guy.
Why, then, did you post "You forgot to add this part to your cut/paste." and then bold a part of an article that was not a quote from Oden? Did you bold that part randomly, or were you using it as evidence of some sort? Ed O.
PapaG has met his match!! "The board requires you to be registered and logged in to view profiles." What's your password, Dinky, so I can admire your profile. Might even post a little bit. I won't say anything that embarrasses you.
I inaccurately used it as a source, since it wasn't a quote, yet Klinky then proceeded to actually quote Oden saying he was cutting back on alcohol, which I will use as support for my opinion that there are red flags for him with partying and drinking. I am able to divorce my personal feelings from my business analysis. They are divergent when it come to Oden for me. Me: Have fun, young man, you're rich. Eat the best foods, drink the best drinks, put your dong out on the internet through a sext to some chick, and screw the best women. Fan-fucking-tastic! Blazer Fanatic Me: Hmmm ... I'm not sure what to think here. He made a point to mention alcohol as being a way to change his lifestyle. I hope he knows what he's doing. GM Me: How much money are we going to invest in this guy? What are the risks associated with it, on the court, injury-wise, and off-the-court?
LOL BTW, whatever happened to The_Taint on ESPN? Did he ever appear after most of us left that board? I also wonder why it took you years to leave that dump, but that's for another day, isn't it?
As an aside, I see that RealGM is under new ownership as of 1/27/11. I also see that is the date that you joined this board. Were you formerly a moderator/administrator/owner of that board? Were you "let go" in a takeover, and immediately went to a new board? I just want to know your history, since you've decided to jump right into this board. I don't question your fandom at all, btw.
The Taint lasted at most a couple of years after you guys left. He changed his name to Dirt Monkey and then to Bukkake. He got banned a couple of times or more, which is typical there. He lived alone and thought Condoleezza Rice was so attractive. He said he always packed a gun, so I told him to sit on it. He had been in the military 8 years. He disappeared, either because he joined the CIA or because he went to jail. He had the personality for both, a downer guy. He used to talk about shaving your mom's back, you're hanging like cheese in the wind, I need your analysis like I need a 3rd nipple, etc. I stayed because I owned that place after you guys left. Then a new generation came in and one guy in particular stalked me till I argued with him and then the moderator dropped the special treatment for me, and treated me like the majority he harrassed. Till then I'd been kind of special. When anyone argued with me, I was pretty forgiving, which will make people stop arguing fast. Worked for years till this one guy shadowed me in every thread. I just got tired of him.
Well your opinion is your opinion I guess, but I think the information you've some how derived over years doesn't even stack up to a house of cards, more like a pile of poo. I guess if you hang around in the poo long enough you don't smell it anymore. I think something like, oh, I don't know, four knee injuries has a lot more pull than "the guy drinks occasionally". They redesigned the website. Ryan Hoak is still the CEO, at least according to the sticky they put on the forums. As for me, I've already posted all you need to know. You can snoop around the Blazers forum and see my posts if you're really interested.
That's one way to look at it. Another is that I smelled poo coming from another room, nobody else smelled it, yet eventually somebody stepped in a mountain of poo that they never knew existed. There you go conflating things again. You came here guns-ablazing (no pun intended). I think we both know why, don't we?
