Bullshit. Schizophrenia is a mental illness. Being a bigot and a bully is not. Saying it is lets them off the hook. After all, a schizophrenic is not legally responsible for his/her uncontrolled actions so why should a homophobic bully be? Bullshit. They are bigots and bullies. Saying these assaults are mental illness (you know, disturbed, just like gay people!) also lets their enablers off the hook. They start from the premise that some people are lesser. You know, "chemically unbalanced" or "dumb" or unfit for equal rights because some supposed prophet supposedly said something a few thousand years ago. Or not "real Americans". Once you accept some people are lesser then it's OK to deny them equality, assault them, or murder them. Once you accept that bullying is a sign of strength (let's be real, despite anti-bullying propaganda, it's the bullies who are admired in school, not their victims) then abuse becomes OK. I'm not saying opposing equal rights is the same as murder, just the same motivation.
