I'm not sure why some people can't let it go. Everyone on this board with the balls to make predictions have been wrong. Big Deal.

However, FWIW I'll go on record as saying Lillard will be BETTER with the big boys than in summer league (give him a year first, though).

Did you see Blaze's diatribe against Lillard and anyone who thought we should pick Lillard? I'm not usually for this, but that dude needs to eat some crow.

Not that I dislike Lillard....but remember Jerryd Bayless? At least wait until the regular season before asking him to eat crow.

I see your point, but Lillard is nothing like Bayless.

My point wasn't to compare them as players, just that summer league sucess =/= NBA success.

    Different kind of success though.

Bayless dominated summer league by getting into the lane and drawing fouls. I swear the guy averaged like 12 free throws a game in SL. He never passed to his teammates and he couldn't buy an outside shot.

    Lillard is the exact opposite.

    Re: Harrison FUCKING Barnes

And the real point is, the success that Bayless had was not a success that could translate to the regular season. He wasn't getting the same calls against established NBA players that he was getting in SL, so he became far less effective. He also wasn't a point guard, so his inability to pass became a major problem.

Fast forward to Lillard, who has shown NBA range beyond the three point line, he has shown an ability to finish in the lane and draw fouls, AND more importantly he has shown an ability to run the pick and roll and find open teammates. I don't think I ever saw Bayless throw lobs like Lillard has..... and that was in two years of summer league, one of which was supposed to be him proving that he could play the point guard position and pass the ball.

This is definitely a night and day scenario. Apples and oranges. etc etc etc

I already said the point wasn't to compare them as players. I just picked Bayless cause he was the first name off the top of my head.

There's numerous case of guys absolutely destroy summer league and failing in the NBA. Qyntel Woods is another. You guys acting like he's already a star when it's been 4 summer league games.

    Re: Harrison FUCKING Barnes

I would love to see a thread about summer league where Qyntel Woods is not mentioned. It's impossible. He and Jerryd Bayless will forever be remembered because they put up big numbers in summer league. Oh.... and Bo Outlaw. I'm surprised you didn't mention him.

The fact is, summer league has changed quite a bit since 2002-2003 when Woods played. It's actually endorsed by the NBA now, there's national TV coverage, and all the big lotto picks play. The competition is considerably better than it was ten years ago. I remember when it was a big deal that Wheels was going down to Vegas to broadcast the games on the radio, BUT they had to broadcast them on taped delay.

Hell, I remember only getting box scores (and not very good ones at that) to see how Zach Randolph had been doing. I remember hearing that Jermaine O'Neal and Bonzi Wells were destroying summer league back when we participated in the LA league, the Rocky Mountain Review, and the Vegas league.

    This is a different league.

But I don't think anyone is saying Lillard is a star. We're merely saying he has some impressive abilities and he has more tools than Bayless did. He's obviously a point guard and not a shooting guard in a point guards body.

I was hoping for Drummond/Rivers out of the draft. It didn't happen and I hope I was wrong. It looks like I was. I would rather the Blazers do well than for me to be proven right.

I was against picking Lillard at #6 and I was wrong. He's not "going to be a star". He already is one. With some players you can just tell. He is one of those players.

    Re: Harrison FUCKING Barnes

    He needs to work on

    1. Going to his right

    2. Splitting defensive traps

    3. Finishing at the rim

    4. Defensive pressure

Before we should start throwing out the "star" word

    Re: Harrison FUCKING Barnes

I completely agree that we need to tap the breaks on anointing him the next great point guard in the league. I've cringed a few times during games when announcers started throwing out names like Derrick Rose, etc.

The one thing he's done for me however is that he's completely changed my mind about the kind of player he is; coming out of Weber State I was pretty worried he was just another shoot-first combo guard who was probably going to be masquerading as a point guard, and would have a huge transition in front of him learning how to run a team. So from that perspective, he's converted me to a believer that he's a real point guard (and a talented one at that) but this idea that he's going to storm the league out of the gate is kind of silly. There's so much stuff that has to break right and so much learning in front of him that it's a disservice to put these premature expectations on him before he's even played in a real NBA game. He's got a great chance to turn into something special, but we really just need to sit back and enjoy the fact that he's even got a chance.

    Slow your roll people.

    Re: Harrison FUCKING Barnes

    1. He goes left because defenses play his right hand. Not a problem.

    2. I agree.

    3. He finishes at the rim fine. Not a problem.

    4. We didnt pick him for his defense. However heis a willing defender. Not a problem.

    He is already a star.

The only thing that he needs to work on is his handle IMO. And it's not bad to begin with.

Hell no. I'm sure I was watching games before you were born to be honest. I know when I see greatness. I see it in him.

The Blazers already see he is special too. Why else would they sign Ronnie fucking Price?
