If the difference is clear, I agree. If there's no significant edge for either, I think you definitely select the player at a position of need.

I'm definitely on board with avoiding Zags. Adam Morrison has forever scared me away from Gonzaga players.

That could be the right answer, but disappointed was told something else. I was excited about just picking the BPA irrelevant of position. I really thought that was the best philosophy given this Blazer squad. That and Blazer have been burned by letting position factor into who to draft in the past. Heck if you ask them back then, they probably would justify that Chris Paul and Webster were in the same tier.

You don't seem like either right now.. If you aren't going to give the Blazers organization a "pass", are you going to stop being a fan?

    Re: Harrison FUCKING Barnes

I completely agree with VanillaGorilla, but I also agree with other statements made in this thread.

The last couple drafts have been complete wastes; beabois and gibson passed over for Claver (draft and stash, I guess - think we traded Mullens?) don't really remember how it went down but Beaubois and Gibson were who I believed we should have picked; was furious with Babbitt for Martell and then Armon, but was happy with Elliot, and last year we obviously had the Smith over Faried issue.

However, that was previous management (or mismanagement) and I came into this draft with clear expectations - acquire assets, get better, draft BPA - but go for need amongst these tiers. This meant Anthony Davis was clearly tier 1. Tier 2 I had Beal, MKG, T Rob. Amongst these players, dependent on our plans for Batum, and where we wanted to head as an organization, I'd choose Brad Beal, solely because we need a SG more than a 3 or 4.

Tier 3 I had Lillard, Barnes, Waiters, Drummond. I would have chosen Lillard, solely because I'm crazy high on him, but also because I believe the gap between him and Marshall is MUCH greater than Drummond and Leonard/Henson/Zeller/etc. I had Marshall quite low in tiers, while my next tier consisted of Leonard/Ross/Lamb/Henson/Rivers. Due to the need process, I would have taken Leonard, Henson, or Ross here (Would have taken Ross, I'm fairly high on him. He is tier 3.5 IMO).

So what it boiled down to was a Tier 3 (Drummond) and about a tier 6ish player (Marshall) or Tier 3 (Lillard) and a tier 4 (Meyers) player.

Within this process, I think we greatly succeeded in achieving our goals, that I had in place for us for the draft.

That is why I label this a great success, and I'm ok with passing on Barnes (as long as we have something in place for Batum - which I believe we do, as Olshey said he is a pillar). It keeps us from having a redundancy, two SFs with similar skillsets, neither attacking, and addressed a need as well.

    Re: Harrison FUCKING Barnes

You don't pass up on a potential super star because you have the position filled. We know painfully well that is a huge mistake.

But if there are no GREAT players left on the board, then I think you do draft for need. I just don't think you can consider Barnes Great.

Leonard on the other hand is different IMO. Still no great players available, but there was a position of need (SG) and a player who some of us thought was pretty good. Maybe they just did not like Lamb from his Monday meeting. I would have taken him but maybe they thought they could get someone equally as good later on. (i.e Barton)

    Re: Harrison FUCKING Barnes

I don't believe that is the case here. If all 30 teams had the choice at the 6th pick I think Barnes would be selected over 5 times as often as Lillard. Thus Barnes was a greatly superior prospect. Obviously its all hypothetical but that's my opinion.

Maybe, which would be correct philosophy but poor scouting. Utilizing the correct drafting philosophy doesn't matter if you can't evaluate correctly. If the Blazers felt Lillard was in the same tier as Barnes, I can't fault them for choosing the player who actually fills a roster hole. However, if Barnes proves to be a clearly better NBA player, I can fault them for poor talent evaluation.

Currently, I have no real idea of Olshey's talent evaluation acumen, so I'm content to wait and see. I'm comforted that mainstream opinion didn't have Barnes as a clearly better player than Lillard. Mainstream opinion isn't always right, but it's all we've got right now, IMO, considering I'm not sold on the scouting eye of anyone in this forum (myself included).

LMAO @ the fuss over Barnes. The guy is incredibly pedestrian. If I had a complaint, it would be Meyers over Lamb. I think we needed another scorer/guy who can get his own shot.

I haven't seen anything to suggest that. Pretty much everything I read suggested that beyond the top four or so (Davis, Kidd-Gilchrist, Beal and Robinson), the next group of players (which included Lillard and Barnes) didn't have very much separating them and were toss-ups. Barnes' stock has been dropping steadily for a long time and he seems widely considered to have not met the hype that accompanied him to North Carolina. I respect that your opinion is different, but my perception is that there was not any significant gap between them in terms of outside perceptions.

    Re: Harrison FUCKING Barnes

But we have no idea if Barnes and Lilard were in the same tier. You are making that assumption while NBA insiders are tweeting that Blazers will be drafting a small and a big.

Just as you can find articles about Barnes being a potential bust, there are many articles that put him in the top four. I can't find an article that puts Lillard in the top 4

Amusing, you claiming to know what kind of fan I am. You know nothing about me.

I'm sorry to see that you're so emotionally wrung-out over draft picks. It suggests that perhaps you need something more in your life.

Good luck to you in all your future fan-ships.

I'm not making the assumption, I'm saying it's a perfectly reasonable possibility. I'm not willing to flay the Blazers for a speculated crime (choosing need over superior talent) when there's no compelling evidence that they did, in my estimation. If, in fact, they did think Barnes was a greater talent but selected Lillard because he fit a need then, yes, I would agree that that's a terrible approach.

Okay. So lets do it -this- way.

Top SFs in the NBA = Something like this. If we give each team NO STARTING CALIBER PG and there realistic options are Lillard, Barnes - who do they draft #6? I'm pretty sure its a unanimous sweep that each team, if they had an above average SF, would go with Lillard over Barnes if there PG was FAR below average and coming off of his rookie year.

    LeBron
    Carmelo
    Durant
    Pierce
    Granger
    Gay
    Batum
    Deng
    etc.

    Re: Harrison FUCKING Barnes

Aw hell, Blazers drafted Lillard so I got to get on board with him. I guess this also means it doesn't make sense offers big contract to a PG that matches with LA's age and prime. So looks like it's Lillard or bust. Just need to process it and move on (since I have already renewed my season tickets).

    Go Blazers!
    Go Lillard.
    Go Leonard?
