It's not a two-year contract, it's a one-year contract with a 2nd year team option thatll get declined. Also, the only reason the gave him that much is to help them trade-wise as he'd amount to more outgoing salary making it easier to match salary in a trade. Also likely that theres a handshake agreement that they'd pay Meyers extra if he decided to waive his NTC no matter what.

They essentially overpaid him to increase they're trade flexibility. The initial contract we gave him hurt our flexibility. Big difference.

Good post, Meyers didn't get paid only because of the flexibility, but he did get overpaid for including that flexibility.

So, there's absolutely no way for us to keep him if he'll have a great season?

He’s gonna have to have a pretty amazing season to go from getting the minimum to something more than the MLE. Yeah he’s young, but the injury concerns aren’t going to just disappear, especially as the investment grows. I think he’s going to play a role for Portland this season, but I don’t think it’s going to be a consistent one. It’s going to be very matchup dependent imo. For example, the first two games are against the Jazz and Rockets. Both have traditional centers backing up theirs starters. In those matchups, it’s more likely that Kanter plays.

Also just like Zach if he wants a raise he not only has to play well when on the floor but has to stay healthy enough to be on the floor.

I definitely think there is, we were not the only team to offer him the min, he chose to come here because of the comradery he saw between the Blazer team in the bubble.

I think some dumb team will throw major money his way if he's efficient and healthy enough throughout the season.

So the MLE is the best we can offer? i'm too lazy to go through CBA nonsense...

If I had to bet on one player who isn’t on the team by the end of the season, it would be Zach.

If I had to bet on any move it would be a trade for Aldridge with Collins as a primary piece.

Without some kind of trade we are above the cap even if we lost Gary, Hoodie (that would be our decision), Zach, DJJ, Melo, Enes, Giles and Blevins. If DJJ opted in, we retained Hoodie, re-signed Gary for lets say 18 million and Zach for around 9 million. We would be at around 140 million which is already like 4 million over the luxury tax and then have to fill out the rest of the roster. We could then still use the tax payer's MLE. That's all if the league raises the cap by the minimum which given the current situation is very very likely.

Yikes, who are we gonna give up to make the salaries match? That's 18.5 million more that has to go out because we are hard capped so we don't get the extra 25% wiggle room, so it has to at least match LMA's 24 million.

pretty sure at that level of salary exchange the maximum differential is 5M rather than 25%. Probably not a lot of difference

wouldn't matter either because I can't see Portland going into the tax to add Aldridge. And you're right...matching salaries would be a nightmare

Why not give DJJ that contract? He’d be a better trade asset than Meyers.

Whose contract are you trading to come even close to matching Aldridge’s? Zach’s rookie deal isn’t close to matching it.

Why not give DJJ what contract, a 2-year contract with a team option instead of a player option, or a more expensive contract...?

Meyers isn't so much of an asset but more of a piece that could help facilitate the trade.

Depends on what or if they can trade him for anything of value. It could still end up biting Miami in the ass and cost them 10 mil for Leonard to sit on the bench and wave his towel for a year.

Thinking he gets moved in some sort of ancillary deal for a former first rounder making similar money with an extra yr or two on his deal.
