"Mike Singletary held back on saying who will play quarterback after the 49ers' bye week, but it's no coincidence that he praised the exact qualities Troy Smith gave the coach last weekend.

Smith led the 49ers to a 24-16 victory over the Denver Broncos, as the offense broke loose for three touchdowns in the fourth quarter. During that game, the CBS broadcast crew said Singletary was disappointed in the team's leadership on offense over the season's first half.

Singletary expounded on that theme Tuesday in words that cast a cloud over Alex Smith's future even when the quarterback heals from a separated shoulder.

"Leadership is the ability to bring the entire offense together, knowing that there are going to be times that you're going to have setbacks," Singletary said.

"A big part of his job is that leadership in knowing that, 'I don't care what happens, what comes or goes, we're going to take this ball, and we're going to go downfield, and we're going to do it as a team.' ""
