That's what I was thinking. It made a much greater statement in history to bring our full Olympic team to Nazi Germany then it would have if we had boycotted it.

Bring Greg Louganis, Dick Buttons and other openly gay announcers to broadcast also and dare the Russians to do something.

Well I wouldn't say about nothing, sure, the ban is unlikely, but the topic is serious and Russia should be roundly mocked and under-patronized till they get their heads out of their asses. Regardless of an organized boycott, I personally am much less likely to buy Russian goods till their laws change.

KingSpeed, I'm glad you started this thread; it seems some thoughtful posters were unaware. Even anti gay posters (with one exception) don't think people should get 10 years for a different opinion.

GOD, sorry, you got it wrong when you say a country can make its own laws as long as they don't infringe the rights of other countries' citizens. So it's OK for Russia to throw their own gays and supporters in prison, for South Africa to rape their own lesbians, for Uganda to execute their own gays as long as they don't arrest/rape/kill foreigners? Would that apply to Nazi Germany? Would they have the right to massacre their own Jews, just not the Dutch and Polish and Russian Jews? Up to a point, yes, countries of course have the right to make their own laws, but there is also a Universal Declaration of Human Rights and when a countrys laws violate basic human rights it is no longer just their business.

MarAzul of course is not on the list of thoughtful posters; he can't be troubled to read the original article, facts are as unattainable to him as English grammar. Trying to explain to MarAzul is a waste of energy; I'd far rather spend my time on something more productive, like explaining particle physics to my cats.

I think this is the key, here. Russia essentially needs to be shamed into publicly admitting that their own laws will be ignored in order to facilitate international visitors and competition. Force them to choose between maintaining their position or maintaining relevance in the world community. If they acknowledge that their "law" isn't worthy to be universally applied, then they basically admit that it shouldn't exist at all.

The U.S. is only one generation past the same homosexuality laws. We're only 100 years past Saudi Arabia not letting women vote. We're only 400 years past the Taliban's system of religion having totalitarian control over every facet of political and cultural power.

I always find it strange that conservatives feel so loyal to the past, yet want wars with any country similar to our recent past.

Heh heh! I bet you know as much about particle physics as your cat. We both know why that would be a short lesson.

I will say you could fill in for the woman at the well with Jesus though. (John 4)

The conversation would be about the same and very short.

    Jesus, "Go call your husband".
    Woman, "I have no husband"
Jesus, "I know" (leaving out the part about having had five)
Woman, "I perceive you are a prophet"
Jesus, " No prophet skills needed" (No hint of a common law husband detected nor any spiritual need for marriage detected, sort of like the cat)
