Dame was still Neil's pick. Nurk was a nice pickup. CJ a good pick. Roco looks pretty good. Powell looks good(hopefully Neil can retain his services) . Enes has been a nice pickup (twice). Seth Curry was a nice addition. Too bad he wasn't with team when we played Denver. He actually ,in all likelihood, would have given Dame a teammate who would have HIT a shot. I don't blame Neil for LaMarcus' poor decision. LA could have been an institution in Portland had he stayed. He is mostly forgettable to San Antonians. Yes Neil has got to hit some home runs this offseason, NO DOUBT ABOUT IT . But he hasn't hit below the Mendoza line consistantly during his tenure either. Just sayin'

Sounds like your friend should quit engineering and get a scouting job in the NBA.

He picked Dame....but the Blazer scouting department had already identified him before Neil was hired right before the Draft. Nurk was a good pickup, but that was almost by accident. At the time, Neil seemed much higher on the Draft pick they were able to acquire for a player they had to move or risk getting nothing for.

CJ was a good pick...but I was told how good Giannis would be well before the Draft by someone who makes the Draft a hobby....and nails it year after year. So CJ was a good pick, but a huge swing and a miss compared to the pairing of Dame/Giannis.

Roco looks good....but he cost us our best 1-on-1 defensive player and 2 1st round picks. Not exactly a bargin. That is Ariza and 4 1st round picks for Collins (horrible miss given the quality and Olympians who went soon after him) and Roco. Enes was a nice addition....for the regular season. Curry was nice.....and then he was gone.

As for LaMarcus, so many people knew he wasn't coming back due to several factors. Neil really missed on that.

....and what he did in 2016 hamstrung this franchise for years. Even if he gave out money that he would lose if he didn't use, what give so much to also rans and who held a gun to his head to give the max amount of years to each one of them. That was terrible!

You have to blame Neil that he didn't either convince LA to sign an extension by the trade deadline or trade him at that deadline. That is on Neil and it's huge. The fact that we're in wait and see mode on Powell is on Neil. Unless we were in contention (which we weren't) I wanted an asset for Gary that lasted longer than a few months. CJ was a weird pick because we already had Dame and everyone could see that they were redundant and he has made CJ into a bad pick by sticking to the narrative that CJ and Dame are the best back court in the league and the foundation for a title. I'm glad in his last news conference he finally seemed to step away from that idea but goddamn it's taken way too long.

With all of the bad free agent signings and the fact that his best moves are probably Nurk and RoCo when we have needed a lot more than that... I would say he's missing on more than 4 out of 5 moves he makes and his worst quality is his lack of imagination and lack of significant moves to get us better.

Bringing him in mid season when we were short handed was a win. We had nothing to lose.

Bringing him back and protecting his legacy was a loss.

My biggest problem with Neil besides all but one of those massive contracts in 2016 is what he has failed to do. It's that his wins piled up in your two posts don't amount to close to enough to expect a contending team from. He hasn't worked for us to get to a place of contending and he has been so sold on his own spin that he has kept guys who just don't work together. Letting LaMarcus walk and not trading CJ have to be the most damning things he's done. That along with keeping a coach for 9 seasons that he just put all of the blame on. If all of the blame goes on Terry Stotts and none of it goes on Olshey for the roster he assembled then how does Olshey stay away from the blame for having Stotts coach the roster?

You bring this up every once in a while, and use it to denigrate Neil. The fact is that EVERY GM, INCLUDING THE BUCKs screwed up on GA.
He was picked #15, so each team picking before that screwed up.
The Bucks screwed up, because if they knew GA would be a superstar, they should have moved up into the lottery to pick him - they didn't.
Teams #16 to 20 could surely have moved up to 11 or 12 to get a superstar - they didn't.
Teams #21 and worse have high caliber players they surely could have traded to get into the end of the lottery...
if only they would have known, but they didn't. The Bucks GM even admitted as much later.

In looking at the 2013 draft, Neil comes up looking like roses. He got CJ, who may be the 2nd best player in that draft, and he drafted at #10. By all means, take a look at who went in the top 10 that year.

cool that D69 is an engineer, so am I.

The one thing that just struck me about the time it's taking us to hire someone is this... Woj's latest tweet about Jason Kidd taking the Mavs job says that he's assembling his staff.

That is a little worrisome for me. All of these newly named head coaches are assembling their staffs and we're likely going to have a rookie head coach that doesn't quite have the connections all of these retreads do. Our new coach has to build our new coaching staff with some of the best names already taken because other teams are getting shit done.

Oh I agree. It’s a lot of low risk moves that never put us over the top. Just kept us afloat. All of the moves that Neil made that he needed to hit on were busts. Not trading Aldridge set us back 4-5 years. Trading Batum for Vonleh. The Afflalo trade. And the Trent trade might really bite us in the ass. It’s too early to tell.

Yeah, I don't think drafting CJ was a miss... I don't even "denigrate" Neil for Zach. Draft picks are dicey, Neil isn't great in the first round and so he just trades all of our first rounders and he is great at bargain shopping later in the draft so he tends to trade back in down there. I really don't have a problem with any of Neil's draft night/day moves; he actually seems to thrive in that environment. I do however hold Neil responsible for keeping CJ all of this time which has held both him and Dame back.

Oh and don't be silly, of course the Bucks got it right and not wrong. You don't say the Bulls fucked up just like the Blazers did because they should have traded into that number two spot to get Jordan. That's not the way this stuff works. What you're saying is that the Bucks should have used more draft capital to get what they got. That can't be true.
