Heisley: ‘A day with Daly was magical’

Hardly anyone knew that Chuck Daly, who passed away this morning after a battle with cancer, was still employed by the Grizzlies.

The Hall-of-Fame coach served as a paid consultant until his last breath. So Griz owner Michael Heisley was deeply saddened to lose an advisor and close friend. The pair last spent time together in February when Heisley went to Daly’s home to watch the Super Bowl.

“A day with Chuck Daly was like a magical day. Everybody is going to remember him for championships and being in charge of the (original) Dream Team,” Heisley said. “But once you got to know Chuck Daly you knew he was a remarkable person. He was as bright as anyone I knew in basketball. And he was such a pleasant person to spend time with. He didn’t try to persuade people or argue. He would just state his position. He didn’t have a need to convince you that his way was the right way.”
