The kid and the professor seemed to be talking about completely different things. From what I could tell, the professor was talking about groups on the whole, and the kid was misinterpreting that as claiming that the general group stereotypes necessarily applied to each specific individual. Conversations cease to be productive when one side (or both) refuse to listen to the other.
I couldn't hear it very well but it sounds like the professor says you can stereotype people from certain places and not others. If the professor says you can assume people raised in podunk white towns are all racist as the kid seems to imply he then he's just as backwards as someone who says all black kids raised in inner cities are gang bangers. I can't say I know that is what he says but it seems plausible at least.
This line cracks me up. Everyone has an opinion (even if it is wrong or politically incorrect) and will speak it out at times. We all hear opinions we don't agree with. However, we are truly lucky to live in a country where we have the freedom of speech to do so. She can speak or write her opinion like she did with the article. And I have the choice to read or ignore future instances in which she does. I have the power of choice. Boom!
