If you look at the south you can see a relic from the cotton belt. A swathe of counties remain Democratic in Republican stronghold states like Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina. This land used to be coastal area, and billions plankton that died here would become the chalk deposits upon which cotton would thrive.
