I'm up at Suttle Lake camping, near Black Butte.

Took my float tube out to fish for kokanee, with an assortment of small gear, wedding ring spinner, crippled herring, Nordic jigs, etc.
Ultra light, flexy rod. I decide to put on a tiny 5 of diamonds, 3/4 inch long spoon made in Canada, eh?

I'm slowly sort of trolling it by paddling slow with the occasional jigging motion.
Something hits it, is there for a second, then let's it go.
I jig it again and he takes it lightly as I gently start reeling in because I think it's a soft-mouthed kokanee. It tolerates me reeling for a bout 3 seconds and the peels out 50 ft of line, jumps out of the water and looks like a fucking chinook, but it's a rainbow.
Holy shit, I got it to the tube 6 or seven times and it kept spooling me.

I got no net, don't really need one for kokanee. I try to tail it a few times and finally decided to get to shore and see it in can beach it.
I broke him off in the shallows.

Modest estimate is 30", 12-15 lbs.
I've caught many ocean sockeye and pinks that were half as big.
This guy was the lake badass.
Hook nose, shoulder hump, tons of power.

    General Sherman.

That's a good story, and in 45 or so years it will be a great story... When you tell your great grandkids about the time their great grand papi almost caught the Loch Ness monster.

Probably someone swimming in the lake got the hook stuck in his shorts.

This is funny because I read the Puerto Rico thread right before this one. Nice continuity.

    Revenge fishing tonight.

I'm going to find that SOB (son of a bass)
and make him pay. He still has my 5 of diamonds in his lip.
