So one of the trades that people like to bring up as a negative against Olshey is the Afflalo trade, largely in part of how Barton was playing in Denver. I have noticed recently that the bloom has fallen off the rose. This is just one example of Denver fans hating on Will. So does it comfort you at all to know that TRob has changed teams from here, to Denver, to Philly, to Brooklyn, and now with LA, and Barton is falling out of favor in Denver? The trade seems like kind of a wash at this point. The gamble with Afflalo didn't work out, but the guys we traded haven't really set the world on fire either.
Barton is a classic journeyman type of player. I can see him moving around with different teams a lot in the future.
Barton was never really good, he just got more minutes in Denver. I mean I guess he's better than he was in Portland, but most (MOST) players improve over time.
The only guy we'll regret not having is Malik Beasley. I think he'll be a good player. He's stuck behind some good players though, so maybe Neil should just trade for him anyway lol
Barton was a ton of fun to watch, half the time. He plays so out of control and is a reckless bottle of energy. Sometimes that energy works out and he looks great and his unorthdox style just messes with opponents, other times he is a turnover machine that can't make a play to save his life and is just frustrating to watch.
But everyone was so unhappy because they felt like that trade was a huge bust for Neil....... and now it really doesn't look that bad.
Correct. Now that Denver developed him instead of us doing so, Denver will get a 1st round pick for him, while we had to pay a 1st round pick to get rid of him. The net cost to us for not developing him? 2 1st round picks.
Love Barton's energy but he's streaky...sometimes it dazzles, other times it doesn't. Problem with Will is his frame and the fact that he's probably reached his ceiling...as someone mentioned he'll be an NBA role player if he stays healthy..he looked great in Plumlees first game and terrible the next game.
You don't use hindsight when you analyze? Interesting method. Even if Olshey had not overestimated his own ability to resign Afflalo, it would have been a bad trade, because Afflalo, as both his earlier (no hindsight required) and subsequent (either GM expertise or our amateur hindsight needed) years have shown, isn't that good. Oops, I used hindsight again. Olshey's job is to evaluate players. As you say, he shouldn't be expected to prognosticate the future.
The few posters who keep bringing this trade up as bad, and boy has it been brought up a lot the last few months, will just find another angle to hate the trade now that Barton isnt playing well.
Ahh, the claim to be in the majority. Quite the opposite. Since Afflalo dumped us as soon as he could get out of town, I've seen a lot more posts against that trade than for it. If the number of posts represented truth well, then there would have been several threads by now about how badly Afflalo has done, similar to this one thread about how Barton has finally fallen off lately. Not that a vote would determine who's right. Logic would. One piece of logic would be to compare what Barton did after the trade, to what Afflalo did.
People casually forget how good the Blazers (including Afflalo) were playing when Matthews went down. I believe the team was undefeated from the time they acquired Afflalo to the time Matthews got injured. It was short lived, but I remember that Dallas game specifically, and telling myself, "we look like contenders."
He fills it up in multiple categories for my fantasy team. Probably better fantasy player than real player. They shouldn't be very unhappy with him right now though because they got him on an absolutely steal of a contract. Now next contract he signs that is when he will need to be more consistent or face criticism.
I remember that video he(afflalo) posted on his instagram where he was like "DL, WM, NB, LA, RL we gonna get a championship" or something. We all had to hold on from making a mess in our pants from that. It was the right deal to make at the time.
