Shane Hmiel gazed into the grandstands and began to cry. The joy of the moment, his moment, overtook his emotions. He had won the 58th annual Hoosier Hundred, his first USAC Silver Crown Series victory. He stood in front of the finish line and smiled.

"I love these big, fast places," he said.

Hmiel left the Indiana State Fairgrounds on a humid Friday night a decisive champion. He led 46 of the first 51 laps in addition to the final 23. The triumph marked the Pleasant Garden, N.C., native's first victory on a dirt track.

Bud Kaeding, the USAC Silver Crown Series points leader entering the event, was second. Jerry Coons Jr. was third. Hmiel wins $10,000. Kaeding collects $5,500, and Coons earned $3,000.
