I know we're matching any offer for Omer, but you think we check to see how bad Hou wants him to see if we can pull off a S&T?

Why all the fuss about a backup center who played less than 15 mpg and has no offensive game?

Oh wait, he's a really good player. OK, then it makes sense.

Appreciating Omer Asik's game requires that you ignore stats and watch the games. He's a monster who stops easy shots like Z-Bart stops rust. I absolutely love watching him play defense.

Re: Houston to aggressively pursue Asik

I really like Omer as a backup, but let's not get carried away. The Bulls needed him to step up with Noah hurt in the playoffs and we basically got swept. He didn't even get 30 minuts in any of the games until the last one, where he played almost 40. 10 points and 9 rebounds in 40 minutes.

If someone is going to offer him starter's money and try to start him, they're in for a big disappointment.

As a role player on the Bulls, who have a deep bench and 3 other guys who play the PF/C positions, he's been very good for us.

He is an energy, defensive monster that can block and change shots and rebound.

The Rockets are prepared to offer Omer Asik an annual contract offer in the $8 million range.

Asik is a restricted free agent of the Chicago Bulls.

Houston similarly pursued Marcin Gortat at the start of his free agency in 2009, though he eventually signed a $34 million offer sheet with the Mavericks that was matched by the Magic.

Do the Bulls really want to pay the guy $15M after two seasons?

    I think he's gone.

    Question:

Would this deal count against the cap for the Rockets the same way it would for the Bulls?

Would the salaries be 8, 8, 8 for the Rockets, or be identical to the terms the Bulls would have to pay?

I ask because if they're the same, then perhaps there's a benefit to Houston for working out a S&T with us that gets us a draft pick or something similar.

That seems like the best outcome for us.

I like Omer, but 15M for a 15mpg guy will probably necessitate some compromising personnel decisions that we'd be better off without.

The Houston Rockets have reached agreement on a three-year, $25.1 million offer sheet with Chicago Bulls free-agent center Omer Asik, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Asik will sign the offer sheet on July 11 and the Bulls will have three days to match or lose him to the Rockets.

    ...

The Rockets have tried to acquire Asik in a trade for over a year, but finally forced the Bulls to have to commit to more than $8 million annually to keep him. The contract is back-loaded, and Asik's salary in the third season of the deal would hit Chicago's books at $15 million.

I think we have to resolve ourselves to Asik being gone. The talks are the Bulls may re-sign Korver, which gives them a reasonable backup at SG and SF and the PG position manned by Teague and Lucas III.

Losing Asik, Watson, and Brewer gets the Bulls at least $10.2M closer to under the LT. I say at least because it's closer to $12.9M if you consider Asik's contract at $5M instead of $2.3M. It's even better for the Bulls if they can re-sign Korver for under the $5M they paid him the past two seasons.

But the Bulls do have to extend Taj Gibson or they won't have any proven depth in the front court two seasons from now.
