Uh, no. That could apply if we had Carmelo, not Rudy Gay. I like Rudy but his arguing with Mayo lately raises red flags.
I think they're substantially similar players, so at the salaries each will command, I'd much rather keep Outlaw. Outlaw makes role-player salary for role-player production. Gay might make significantly more for role-player production. If I could have either one for Outlaw's salary, I'd probably pick Gay because he's a couple of years younger so may improve a bit more (of course, he stagnated after his first couple of seasons, so that's far from a guarantee). You're not the boss of me.
I think Rudy Gay has more potential to be a better player than Outlaw when he hits his prime, but right now the difference between the two is pretty thin in my opinion ... Gay is a better ball handler and finisher, I'll give him that, but what else? I can't really think of anything. Besides Mixum, who is saying we can't trade anybody? If it were Martell, Outlaw, Blake and Bayless for Gerald Wallace and DJ Augustin I'd be all over that ... hell I would have traded Nic for Wallace last year when it was reportedly on the table, but c'est la vie. I've got nothing to learn because I'm just a fan and don't make the call on trades -- that's up to KP and the rest of management.
The only thing that would give me pause on that is Wallace's injury issues. Outside of that, I'd have done that deal, too, as much as I love Batum. Even with his lack of durability, I may still have done it.
Even under the assumption that Roy = New Age Jordan, I'm thinking Gay's a bit behind Pippen in the "All Time Greatest Defenders Team" category, the "Point Forward Capability" category and the "Best Player on the Court, Except When He's Playing With Jordan" category. Unless, Roy = Pippen and Gay = Jordan?

Career averages of 24.4 PPG, 6 RPG, 3 APG. The first three games of this seasons he's putting up nearly 40 ppg. I'm a fan of Rudy Gay, but c'mon! He's not on Carmelo's level.
