As for the RFA's, here is what you guys need to remember. 1. It is not a common thing where RFA's sign with other teams and go to that other team. It is VERY rare. 2. The way you think you can get an RFA is offer a contract the other team cannot match. Here is the issue with that. The cap goes up 6 mill next season, so pretty much everyone will have cap space to work with. PLUS at some point you say is the contract way over the top and maybe a dumb deal for us, which defeats the purpose of signing the guy. 3. If you get an RFA at a resonable rate, you have to think the other team didn't want the player, so again you sure we want the player if the other team is letting him walk for a reasonable deal? 4. Even if you give a "crazy" deal you don't think can be matched, the other team still can match anyway. See Sakic with us and Weber with Philly. Add it all up, and to me it is a faultly plan to say we'll re-build by signing other teams RFA's. Very unlikely that happens unless we get crazy with the offers, and even then no given. Plus we open ourselves up to pay back as was mentioned. Not sure that should be a big part of a miny re-build plan this summer.
Don't know, but unlikely given where they were in their careers when they signed those deals. I do know Hank has a NTC though.
I agree Chuck, i guess i shouldve said even if they cant trade him they need to move on from him. Hopefully they do but to be honest the way he looks now i dont see anybody giving alot for him. Maybe a 2nd and a decent prospect which would be fine. Guy's been a total slug for most of the year.
That pay back thing with RFA's never happens now that I think about it. I've never seen teams paid back yet for making a RFA offer. The Flyers have done it twice. I'm still waiting for them to get paid back. Still waiting.
Neal is the guy they should've gone after a few years ago. Johansen is the guy i really wanted in that draft too.
Sending McIlrath was beyond stupid. You could see how much more courage the Rangers players had in that game. Our coach and GM clearly can't grasp that. Honestly, I see no point in not trading Callahan, Girardi, Brassard, Boyle and MDZ and just going with what you get back, playing Kristo, McIlrath, Allen, Miller and Lindberg the rest of the season. It's not like this team has any chance of winning a cup this year. Might as well get these kids valuable experience. I think they really need to see which of those kids can contribute next year so they can judge what they want to do in UFA and RFA.
Are you also still waiting on somone to actually get the player dump...LOL. No pay back when you don't get the player. The RFA market is a tough way to go. History proves that. Nothing to really debate here IMO.
Doesn't matter if they get that player. That has nothing to do with pay back. You think the Preds were happy about matching that moronic contract the Flyers offered Weber? If teams worried about payback, the Flyers would have gotten it from the Preds.
Makes sense, but I can't see us doing that. Girardi I can see getting dealt. Brassard maybe. MDZ maybe. Boyle strong chance if we can get anything decent back. But I doubt we deal all those guys. I'd say 1 or 2 go, the rest stay. Doubt we do a fire sale. Goes against who we are right or wrong. I will say this, if we continue to really stink for many more weeks, then all bets are off. I am assuming we are up and down and hanging around the last playoff spot, or at least within reasonable shouting distance. If the wheels continue to really fall off, I could see us dealing a lot of these guys.
I also think it has to do with players available. Can't just get payback just to say it. You actually have to want a player from that team. At any rate, we are off on a useless tangent. Bottom line is signing RFA's away is very rare for MANY reasons. I don't think that is a plan to build a summer of moves around.
It's rare because as I've said many times, 95% of GM's are morons. If hockey GM's were smart, they would realize that UFA's are bidding wars with older players and usually turn out to be bad investments. Teams should all move towards making RFA offers. It's smarter. It's like when Billy Beane drafted college players who were more pro ready. All the teams started doing it. Then when everybody did it, he started drafting the best H.S. players. The best value is where the least competition is. Teams don't expect their young players to sign RFA offer sheets. That is why it is the best thing to do if your the team offering it. Especially if you have extra draft picks.
