<div class="quote_poster">Quoting cula:</div><div class="quote_post">first of all i did not say that anybody needs to get arrested, but that is should be the police who looks into it and not the nba disciplinary comission or whoever.

on a second note, when you go out and knock anybody out for throwing a plastic cup full of beer i think it goes beyond self-defence. that is just a mindless reaction asking for further trouble.</div>

So if I threw a plastic cup full of beer at you your just going to laugh it off and walk away? If you answer yes...I laugh at you. Just telling you ahead of time. I'm sorry but I have to laugh at anyone who has such little respect for themselves they allow themselves to take that kind of abuse on television. Whoever threw it needed to get knocked out. I would have dragged him onto the court and thoroughly beat him. Ring?Pride and Dignity? Hmm. I'll keep my pride and dignity thank you. I have never been so proud of Artest in my life. Now if only my team could get tough...

assuming you meant to say: "...full of beer at you you're just going to laugh it off..." my reply would be - no. i see no reason to laugh for having a cup of beer thrown at me. but considering that i am getting paid millions for my playing (and included in that is set of basic responsibilities) in comparison to some fan who has no better manners or brain power, but to scoop down to a low level of animal behaviour - yes i would try to avoid conflict.

Ah thanks. I knew there was something wrong with that sentence but I didnt bother to proofread and correct it. So you'll just take it??? Wow! That is a surprise. How much is your pride worth to you? Cant be much if you'll let yourself get humiliated like that.

i think i was trying to put emphasis on your responsibilities to your employers and the team, over a reaction to some stupid 'nobody' fan.

There are times when your responsibilities are to yourself. Like respecting yourself. Defending yourself. It wasnt just a stupid "'nobody'" fan who heckling Artest. He threw something at him. When do you think Artest should react to him? There is absolutely no way someone can walk away from that situation without reacting and feel good about themselves. Artest might not be the happiest person in the world right now but right now he has his self respect which is more valuable than the millions and millions of dollars he's making.

self-respect is based on how you carry yourself and there are different ways that could be argued. while i accept your point to an extent what i am suggesting that this could looked at from another angle. there is value in showing that you need not scoop down to the level of some drunk fan that doesn't know any better, rather than engaging in exactly the manner he would have wanted.

og15, the double team didn't work... and cula Artest's fuse is short... maybe yours is long... he actually tried to control himself after Ben pushed him in the face... so he tried to calm himself by laying on the scorer's table and then there's this moron throwing that thing at the player who is trying to control his temper... he knew exactly what'd he get... okay maybe he didn't because he was too drunk... but that drunken master got what he deserved a bip-bip from Artest.

I blame in on the fans. Im sorry, there was no reason to do that. Why did the fans come to the floor? Why did they throw things to Artest after he was already lying calmly on the table. I put some blame on Artest for going to the bleachers, but"SOME" of the fans in Detroit really provoked that riot to continue. I hope they prosecute everyone they see throwing objects to the Indiana players. That brawl was a disgrace to Detroit and to the NBA in general. It should have ended with a Ben Wallace suspension after that push. It didn't have to go much futher than that. Ugly stuff.

This is what Marty Burns had to say in his article:

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">It needs to have a talk with Pistons ownership. Late Friday night Pistons CEO Tom Wilson went on TV and basically blamed Artest for causing the riot by lying on the scorer's table close to the crowd instead of standing on the floor. What kind of corporate PR nonsense is that? Referee Tommy Nunez Jr. was standing on the floor -- and he got hit in the head with a bottle.

The Pistons organization needs to admit their fans caused it by acting like hooligans. It wasn't just a few loudmouths behind the bench either. As Artest was escorted off the floor far away from the scene behind the bench, he was still getting nailed with a barrage of beer cups and garbage. Other fans were literally running to the railings to dump beer and popcorn on the Pacers players as they were exiting the aisles. It's all there on the videotape if the Detroit brass has the guts to look at it.</div>

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2004/writ...eact/index.html

Hooligans, barbars, cowards, drunk blue-collars... those are the Detroit fans that came to the game and got involved in the fight or pelting actions.

Made for some good reading but that's it. Just because these guys are highly paid athletes doesnt mean they have to take that kind of nonsense. That is not part of the job. Artest had every right to go up there and protect himself. Afterall what that fan did is considered assault. While I can see where youre coming from I dont agree. I know from personal experience that being reasonable and turning the other cheek is a waste of time. A confrontation was inevitable. You cant let people throw stuff at you. Just cant. So no I dont think the players should be fined or suspended. They protected themselves and each other. The fans involved should be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law as well as lose their season tickets. Alcohol should not be sold at these games. That's what I think. All you said from your other posts were that you'd avoid conflict. Which means to me run away. Bow your head, suck in that pride, and walk away. Which is wrong. If someone hits you you have every right to hit them back. That's just my opinion though.
