I am feeling quite optimistic at the moment. End of season and draft thoughts.

thats one of the key points, signing your own key players with the larger contract sizes for guys in the league a while and retaining good players coming off their rookie deals like CJ costs a ton, and once more of that gets worked into the overall salary structure there will be a lot less to go to the more marginal rotation players and we will not see the largess we saw last summer. Even with the cap going up this summer I don't think we'll see as many of the Deng/Mozgov/Crabbe/Turner/Noah etc type contracts. Marquee players will get huge deals but I think reality is "starting" to sink in

We have Nurkic for another year or so on his rookie deal...no need to extend him this summer in my view...maybe before training camp he'll get an offer of an extension but he's not a free agent this summer

if he plays well for the rest of the yr I could see the Blazers trying to offer him a "reasonable" extension, and defining "reasonable" in this environment is not easy. Most teams do have solid C's and since I believe more sanity/reality will set in this summer and even moreso in 2018 if he's not "reasonable" I have no issue waiting until 2018 and perhaps even think that is the wiser choice as far as the Blazers bargaining position goes.

We cant afford to pay both Turner and Crabbe to be on the bench. One needs to either start or be traded. Personally, I like the lineup of Dame/CJ/Turner/Aminu/Nurkic.
I think Crabbe is more moveable in todays game as well. There are teams like NO who really need outside shooting now tro pair up with thier bigs.
Looking at salaries, it would need ot be a three team deal, but if we could jusat offload Crabbe and Leonard somehow and walk away even, id be completely happy.. We could afford to resign Nurkic ad package our pick and Cleves pick(if we dont make the playoffs) to try to move up to get Jackson in the draft. Then use Memphis pick to go after Motley

    Dame/Napier
    CJ/Connaughton
    Turner/Jackson
    Aminu/Motley
    Nurkic/Leonard

Yeah... No. That aint cutting it. I dont know wth Im talking about...

Why can't we afford to bring them off the bench, but can afford to start one? They're still making the same amount of money, likely playing the same amount of minutes.

I really need to get back into college hoops. I've not heard of any of these guys. I found out just this morning that consensus #1 pick plays at Udub? What the hell? Why do they suck?

What about the Brooks kid at Oregon? Where is he projected to land in the draft? Is he a pro prospect?

Because the money left wont allow us to find a quality starter. Meaning if they both arent starters but are both getting starter money. Our starting unit would suffer in some way because of it.

Think about it. So we have basically $50 mill in Dame and CJ. Then another $35 mill in Turner and Crabbe, both off the bench. That leaves $20 mill to fill three starting positions and the rest of the bench.
Too much money paid to both of them, unless one of them is a starter, because then the bench player isn't making as much.

So the solution is to start a bench level player as a starter? We need to get rid of one because of it, not start one.

LT will be $122M, so ~$40M to fill out the roster.

I think we need a real PF, Aminu helps us now, but he isn't a long term solution. Vonleh shows flashes that I like, but seems more like a backup to me.

Well duh. But you asked why they couldn't both be on the bench. Same answer applies. :)

Either way, of you start one or neither, you still have a bench level player to compliment, regardless of Turner or Crabbe starting or not.

That's where we disagree. I think Turner is a capable starter when with the other right starters. CJ/Dame/Turner is a decent start.

    Hello darkness, my old friend
Turner could be an okay starter if you have a few stars around him and shooting from every other position. If you envision Nurk as the long-term center, then that route is already closed off. These days, it's hard to field starting units (or units, in general, that play a ton of minutes) with more than one non-shooter.
