<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Becar @ Feb 1 2007, 10:22 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>I agree with you 100% that fundamentals must be taught at that age. I was just sayin that they arent the most important. Your job (at that age), is to teach the principals of the game. My point is that over-emphasizing the fundamentals is a mistake. They ARE secondary to good sportsmanship, working hard and having fun. Im almost 100% that I could take a junior in high school who hasnt touched a ball since he was a kid, right now, and have him playing varsity ball next year. As long as he had the right attitude and work ethic. It is harder to teach those to a 16 year old than fundamentals.</div>Well, I'm still kinda disagreeing. I agree fully on the teaching things other than the physical aspects, but I think they would all be a step (or more) behind everyone else if I only tought them the principles. Of course, I don't want to teach them how to be a bunch of ball-hogging pricks, but "just hustle" wouldn't cut it. It wouldn't help them develop physically. You might be able to help a 16 year old become a varsity player sometimes, but let's imagine that someone played 3rd grade basketball, then never did again until 16. I would highly doubt you could get him to that level in a 4A/5A school. That's assuming he isn't like 6'4"+ or something. Realistically, some kids quit after the first few years. Teaching some of these guys how to do the little things will help them a lot in the long run in many sports, and might just keep them from quitting so quickly if at all. Kids learn these things better at this age. It's a fact of motor behavior.edit: That is to say that I think everything goes hand in hand. If I were just teaching good sportsmanship, I would probably be a ref or something.
