if you think these lottery picks are going to turn this organization around history says your wrong. whatever happens we trade the picks or keep them there both just starting points for everyones final goal. To win a championship.

IIRC this is not the first time Wheels has postulated the Blazers trading for Johnson. Wheels: Forget about Joe Johnson. Please.

If you say these lottery picks most likely won't lead us to a championship you are right.

If you say trading these lottery picks for a veteran most likely won't lead us to a championship you are right.

Either route is going to be very difficult and most likely end with disappointment. Only one team out of 30 wins the title.

This team needs to add multiple starting level talents to the roster to contend. Using our picks and cap space on one player won't get the job done. I want to see the team take whatever actions that increases the talent and also leaves the team with flexibility to add more talent through future moves. That could mean just taking best player available at 6 and 11. Or it could mean packaging both picks for a veteran while keeping some cap flexibility, the new veteran would be a magnet to land a third stud in free agency.

I wonder if this is a legit rumor, or just speculation? Maybe Blazer management told him to say something so other teams start making offers. Johnson would take up 1/3rd of our cap space all together. If he were a 12 million dollar guy, I'd probably trade our #11 for him, but his salary is going up to over 25 million when he is in his mid 30s.

Going after Joe Johnson is HIGHLY reminiscent of another aging, high quality (but not superstar) shooting guard we took off Atlanta's hands--Steve Smith. That deal made sense because he was the last piece in the puzzle to make the Blazers the most overall talented team in the league (and 12 minutes from a championship).

We are clearly not at that point. So, no. Not even. If he's traded, he's going to a team like the Lakers who can afford his contract and really use his services.

If we could get Joe Johnson's career to date for our lottery pick(s), then that's one thing. But we can't.

We can get the current and future Joe Johnson, who isn't all that good.

Coupled with his salary and the state of the rest of the roster, I think it would be a disastrously short-sighted move to acquire Joe Johnson for a deal including our lottery picks.

I love Wheels, one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet... but I don't like this trade idea.

    Yeah, this is truth.

But, I do agree with the concept, just not the player he suggested.

If the best deal we can make for our picks are for aging vets, keep the picks. See who is there at 6, grab BPA. If you get a big at 6 (Drummond), go for a PG at 11. If you get a guard at 6, go big at 11 (Zeller).

A combo of Drummond and Marshall, or Beal (or any other top player still around at 6, other than Drummond) and Zeller (or go for the high-risk, high-reward of Perry Jones) would be a decent start to the rebuild. Best way to go? Perhaps not. But better than a quick reload that maybe barely gets us into the playoffs and doesn't help us build a youthful group for the future.

    That't not BPA.

BPA is drafting the Best Player Available regardless of position.

When guys are similar in terms of overall potential for their respective positions in the NBA, you go BPA as it fits in with your needs. We need big and small. Barring some unexpected slides, picking two big men or two smalls would just be plain stupid. So you go one big, one small.

I agree... and I don't see why we'd only need one of each.

Bingo. 5 years ago, JJ was a desirable asset. So was Brandon Roy. Not relevant to the current discussion.

So was players like Rudy Gay, Kobe Bryant, Andrew Bynum, Joakim Noah, Brook Lopez, Stephan Curry and Brandon Jennings.

smart picks can be had at 6 (or 11) just as stupid ones can be at 1 or 2.

I just spent some time looking at the 2006 NBA draft. God damn that was a weak draft.

Jason Quick has a similar disturbing mancrush: DARREN COLLISON

Not as bad as Wheels and 'Tones lust for Joe Johnson but looking at what Darren has done in New Orleans and Indiana I fail to see how he's (A) anything more than a backup PG -- (B) worth a first round pick, let alone a lotto pick.

This team needs a legit GM who knows what he's doing. S2 could run this team better than what is currently there.

I'm not saying we need just one of each. I just think we have no idea how free agency will turn out. We could end up signing a bunch of scrubs. The draft is a good resource to use to grab a big and small with potential that the team has control over for some time.
