Or, if the player they're looking to "amnesty" has a bigger contract than Roy's. Joe Johnson, anyone?

He rested? I thought he had surgery. I seem to remember other reality checks last winter too, like he will never play again in the NBA.

Again, they need to be sure.

Even if Roy can squeeze out 5 more years

Do you really think it'll be at a franchise player level? Because that's the value of his current contract.

You just can't justify that contract on the salary cap. It'd be a big waste for a role player.

That is true. But if he is able to play then I think he is more than a role player. And I am willing (since it is not my money) to wait a year to know for sure.

I know some of you guys like your stats, but I am not a big stats guy. I believe he is our best "jump" shooter. Mid range and long range. Replace him first and then I will change my tune. Until then I say wait.

I'm admittedly not a fan of the Oregonian hack, but this one felt especially rushed and poorly based on anything. Seems like he wrote that in 25 minutes.

Oh well.....he was on TV Sunday night predicting that the Duck football program was headed for disaster. 25 minutes is probably all the time he had before they forced him to take his evening meds.

Lots of Blazer tweets. Please start from reading from bottom up

    KBergCBS Ken Berger
If Blazers amnestied Roy next year, it would create space to sign a free agent. This year, all they'd save is $.

Waiving B. Roy would restore full Mid-Level for Blazers. MLE-range free agent bigs: Carl Landry, Kwame Brown, Glen Davis, Chuck Hayes

I'm not buying that the Blazers have already made a decision on Roy. It may end up being the wise business move, but why not take a look?

Using amnesty for Roy would save on tax bill, but wouldn't give Blazers cap room to replace him. Key part of decision.

Why would GM from another team say he knows the Blazers' plans on Roy? Probably b/c it's the same GM who has long tried to sabotage the team

While it may be true that Paul Allen wants to amnesty Roy, that doesn't mean it makes sense. In speaking with NBA cap man, it doesn't.

Update: Katy Brown of KATU.com has a similar report...
    -----------------------
The Portland Trail Blazers are reportedly planning to part ways with Brandon Roy. An NBA league source told KATU’s Katy Brown that Roy has likely played his last game in a Blazers uniform and the word is out around the league that Roy will soon be on the market. The team plans to waive Roy under the "amnesty clause" that is part of the new NBA labor agreement, which is expected to be passed later this week.

A league executive from another NBA team told Brown the decision came straight from Trail Blazers owner Paul Allen.
    -----------------------

Update: Jason Quick of The Oregonian plays good cop to the bad cop reports.
    -----------------------
Blazers guard Brandon Roy has been working out mornings at UW with other NBA players and has reported no setbacks w/knees. Why would GM from another team say he knows the Blazers' plans on Roy? -----------------------

Marc Stein of ESPN.com kicked off this most recent, intensifying round of Amnesty Clause chatter last night.

A few notes: If Roy is waived, Portland would be left with seven players on the roster -- including Earl Barron -- who have played more than 82 NBA games.

Their projected bench rotation would be: Nicolas Batum, whoever they sign with the Mid-Level Exception, Nolan Smith, Chris Johnson and... stop me when this gets too painful.

Hmm, does Freeland have any kind of buy-out?

Not only is this roster thin it lacks talent.

More depressing: 130+ days of the lockout or this Blazer roster in the short-term and long-term?

That's been my point for over a year now. Roy and LMA are the only two players on the team that can demand a double-team and can create their own offense. Having Roy, even if it's off the bench, is crucial this year. Trading Bayless was the worst decision of the Cho era, IMO. Had they kept Bayless, he could have been a mini-Roy off of the bench.

Roy doesn't command a double team anymore ... he may get a double team, but the days of him actually beating that double team efficiently and regularly are in the rearview mirror.

Not that I believe Canzano, but you've got to wonder what Nate thinks about this. In fact, you've got to wonder what Nate thinks of the whole Trail Blazers organization. He's about the only ounce of class it's got left.
