<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Run BJM:</div><div class="quote_post">Hes a very good fit on a team like LAL where you had Shaq and Kobe. Fish really just brought the ball up the court and passed it to Kobe who handled the ball the rest of the possession and Fish's only real offense was spot up 3's off of passes from the paint, which is his bread and butter. On GSW right now, we don't have anyone other than Baron that can handle, shoot, penetrate, and pass so we need a PG who is going to set up our other players. Fisher just brings the ball up the court slowly, passes the ball, gets it back within a few seconds, and chucks a long fading shot. He would probably work well with a dominant post presence but on GSW we don't have alot of guys who can't get their own shots, thats why we need a pure PG who is going to distribute and allow others to score.

Fisher is terrible at running the break, which is important for the Warriors because we need all the free points we can get without a good post player. Baron runs the break very well but we still want another guy at PG who can run the team properly because Baron can't play the whole game and hes often injured, which I think is partly due to the fact that he plays so much because his backup sucks.</div>
Yeah, that's true. Although Fisher is highly skilled in the passing, dribbling, shooting type of game, it's not enough when it comes to putting those talents into good decision-making and creating shots for others. When few guys can create in the post or off the dribble, you need a real point guard to dice defenses up or catch the other team when their defense isn't set.

Well rounded teams can get away with playing a non-playmaking two guard at point guard if they have a center and another guy that can make plays happen inside and out. Spurs and Pistons sort of have that kind of game where they make other guys involved as the setup guys in the play by having shooting guards that can pass/dribble/shoot or big men that can create something out of the double team down low or from the high post.

We have always relied on lightning quick guys like Claxton/Nick Van Exel/Arenas/Baron Davis to go out and create something for guys who traditionally have stood around on the arc waiting for something to happen. We saw the same thing with Musselman and the guys before him just like we do with Montgomery right now where the other four players don't know what to do. It's like guys don't understand fundamentals of off the ball movement or calling out plays. I blame this on the point guard/coaching lack of communication and the inability for the team to break bad habits. At least a guy like Ike Diogu and Dunleavy (for all their shortcomings) tend to anticipate well on where to be positioned off the ball.

This is why I would like to give Montgomery a chance because he's not given very smart and lightning quick point guards at his disposal to really make plays effective. If we wanted to go the combo guard route, I would have liked somebody either quick, longer or stronger like Tony Parker or Sam Cassell or Kirk Hinrich that will run plays. I've always liked Baron Davis, but if he can't buy into what the coach is telling him and he's putting up ugly low % shots from everywhere, it just won't work. The same thing goes with Fisher who isn't a real point guard and isn't quick nor great at decision making...

I see Ellis as a very possible option (too early to tell if he's given starter's minutes), but we have to find some way to get this guy playing time over guys who have guaranteed contracts for 4 more years and find some inside presence BADLY. Ike needs to find some ways to steal playing time from Dunleavy/Murphy. Although Dunleavy isn't a power forward, he's often put there because we can't create dribble penetration from any other spots on the floor at point guard or shooting guard. We could fix this if either Pietrus gets some smarts, Jrich gets some ballhandling and better playmaking ability, or we find ways to unload Fisher/Murphy. There's really nobody in the depth chart that could replace Dunleavy, which is kind of sad, but I guess we should be grateful he's trying to do something unselfish for the good of the team rather than care about his own numbers.

So this whole development process is really reliant upon Mullin cleaning up the books, and finding out whether Ike can get numbers consistently as Murphy on the glass and in scoring figures, and whether or not Baron/Ellis can develop into true point guards (extensions of the coach on the floor). Then the other four guys will have to buy into the play sets as well and contribute in the ways their positions are expected to play. Forward/Center have to dominate the paint, box out, set good hard picks, know when to roll off the screen, catch the ball, finish on either side of the rim. Guards and the wing have to do almost everything perimeter guys are expected to do including shooting, passing, rebounding, dribbling in a variety of ways. No team will be perfect, but the guys with the most strengths and fewest flaws has a strong foundation and most likely will develop a strong chemistry if they play within their roles on the team.
