The only reason I mentioned it was because this job deals with figuring out who to give scholarships to. I guess I felt that I could help to relate to the position by expressing my previous experience in getting scholarships and realizing the value they can have in helping someone further their education (although my scholarships were all merit based, not need based like the position I was applying for deals with). But anyways, I think the cover letter is important. A few years ago my resume was two pages and I received no interviews for internships. The next year not much changed except I condensed my resume to a single page and I had much better feedback. Just about everyone asks for a cover letter...and it's difficult because you want to come off as creative and unique without looking strange. And it does take effort to get them for each position. I am also trying to get at least one cover letter done per day. That's sort of my minimum quota.
Yeah, 1 page resumes are better. I've tried a bunch of different ones..i've had luck with the "functional resume" but that's after a few years of experience. kind of mixed it up....i used to apply for jobs when work was teh suck.
That's the best. IMO, what you should do is hire someone from elance.com to submit resumes and cover letters for you. have them search for jobs...pay them like 4 bucks an hour. Go to England. Exchange rate is 1.37:1 right now.
Wow, yeah I was there about 15 months ago and I was getting killed by the exchange rate. That's much more reasonable. I was thinking more along the lines of SE Asia, check out Africa. Swing over to Australia maybe. I've been to a lot of places in Europe, and wouldn't mind going back, but I'd rather check out places I've never been to.
Yeah, I was in the philippines about 2 months ago....fucking fun. Everything is CHEAP as fuck. go to some nice tropical islands...get some massages. Thailand and other parts of asia are similar....and good culture shit. Hawaii is really cheap to go to right now....you can fly for like 300 bucks at least from LA. I love going there for just a weekend and chillin....hotels right in waikiki are like 120 a night and shit.
You should read "the 4 hour work week" if you get the chance. talks about all this shit....outsourcing your life, travelling, etc. I've been doing that alot actually since I read it and have been having a blast.
Yeah that was an item on my Christmas list that no one got for me, so I might go pick it up myself here soon. Still have a handful of books to read. My parents are actually in Hawaii right now spending a month there. I wouldn't mind going over to the SE Asia. I'm 23, don't have any kids (that I know of ) and currently don't have a significant other. This is probably the time for me to go over there before my "real" (boring?) life has to begin. Might as well live it up because you only live once right? I was just hoping to make some scratch so I didn't have to borrow money for the adventure. My mom would help me but as it is she lost about half a million dollars on a house that she's going to have to foreclose on (unfortunate because it has a private beach in Washington) and doesn't have the liquid to supply me.
QUESTION (COVER LETTER) What do you guys think about starting it: Dear Mr. X, "I am an ideal candidate for the xxxx position because of my..." Hard hitting and straight to the point. Confident, but is it too much so?
the author has a pretty decent blog. he's kind of a tool though...but i guess he's happy. Its a really really easy read. http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/ and seriously, if you don't want to get caught up in corporate bullshit, don't...fuck that, life is too short. find another way.
Really great book. Personally, I just couldn't think of a high profit item to sell that was as effort free as his ideas, but maybe my imagination was too limited.
I'm going to try to do some ebook stuff through clickbank and amazon kindle. Trying to come up with some topic...I'm thinking of ways to survive the impending economic collapse. other possibilities too. there's no costs associated it except producing it, which shouldn't be that much. with clickbank's affilite network, they market it for you. not sure how profitable that all is though.
Certainly no one right out of college should have more than 1 page. Stretching it to two just highlights how thin your experience is, because you'll be spending a lot of space on very little content. Maybe if you've got many years of experience, more pages. barfo
I don't bother to even look at the cover letter unless the resume interests me. And even then it is more likely to turn me off than turn me on. But every employer is different - for some the cover letter will be key, some will look at your education first, etc. barfo
That's the trick isn't it. What one recruiter might love, another may dump at first sight. It's frustrating, and I've been spending time yesterday and today reading up trying to get all my cover letter tips down so that I can make sure I write one that does me justice.
I haven't tried using an affiliate network yet for our store. It's something I've often pondered. Why did you choose Clickbank?
It seems to be one of the bigger ones out there. I'm just learning about affiliate networks right now, but for making ebooks, its pretty low cost to set everything up, they have the checkout page, etc. lots of cross promotion of products, etc.
