I just went to Best Buy and spent a good while comparing many televisions. Upon talking to the sales guy, I'm now wondering if my best bet might be to go with a plasma....considering I don't game and usually just watch sports, tv shows, and movies. That said, I liked this one: http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-VIERA-TC-P50G10-50-Inch-Plasma/dp/B001UAEWUS Do you have any druthers...................plasma vs. lcd? The plasma refresh rate is 600hz and this particular model is 1080p.
I bought a plasma. If I had to buy a TV today, it'd be LED or Plasma. The LED is really expensive, but they'll come down in price. In fact, I own a 58" Viera. I love the picture. The black frame kind of disappears in a dark room, which adds to the experience. The built in speakers suck, but I don't care since I use a sound system. Check out the reviews on cnet. They have a "best picture" set of rankings and you can go from best to less best and find one in your price range. I figure you are going to spend $1K+ and not going to want to throw the TV away in a couple of years to get something new. If the picture is great for 5-10 years, you can always upgrade the sound system, get DirecTV or whatever, to improve your experience. http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-tvs/panasonic-tc-p50g10/4505-6482_7-33497901.html?tag=mncol;lst Panasonic TC-P50G10 The good: Superb black-level performance with excellent shadow detail; highly-accurate primary colors and grayscale in THX mode; great color saturation; uses less power than previous 1080p plasmas; VieraCast provides access to select Internet services. The bad: Expensive; less-accurate green color decoding and secondary colors of magenta and cyan; limited light output in THX mode; skimpy picture controls; still less efficient than comparable LCDs. The bottom line: With excellent picture quality marred by only a couple of flaws, the Panasonic TC-PG10 series sits near the head of the class of 2009. Thank You! I'm just about to pull the trigger at: http://www.us-appliance.com/ I'll be receiving the TC-P50G15 TV for $1,199....free shipping. PLUS, they're throwing in a Panasonic DMP-BD60 Blu-ray disc player for free. PLUS, I'm getting 5% off of the TV from bing.com. Not too bad, I'd say.
You are going to love it. Picture is going to be awesome. But picture is half the experience. With a good sound system and blu ray, it's better than going out to the movies, IMO.
Yep, I got last years 1080p Panasonic at costco for 1199 and with a PS3 playing bluray it is freaking awesome. Not too long after I got it I saw a preview for The International with Clive Owen on a bluray I was watching and went to the theater and saw the same preview. The theater had one thing over my 50 inch tv, size and that is all. I have an older Harmon Kardon stereo without HDMI inputs but it still sounds awesome, need to upgrade though.
I suppose I went a bit crazy yesterday. Here's what I landed: Panasonic TC-P50G15 50" VIERA® G15 Series 1080p THX®-certified Plasma HDTV Panasonic DMP-BD60 Blu-Ray Disc Player Onkyo TX-SR507 5.1-Channel A/V Surround Home Theater Receiver Energy Take Classic 5 Pack 5.0 Home Theater Speakers Altogether, set me back $1,620. I think I did really well, though.
I did go to Best Buy to verify some things. Didn't buy anything there, though. All of these purchases were made on-line. (following a fair amount of research on each.) Good idea regarding the new couch!
Break that sucker in right and then get it calibrated if you have the cash. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=949107
Thanks. I talked to a friend this morning...........who had just returned from Taiwan.....and they told him that Plasma is entirely going away..........soon. He then told me that (they said) I had made a HUGE mistake in buying this plasma television, as opposed to lcd. I don't care. I'm still "good" with this purchase. I'm just going to make sure I break it in correctly. I downloaded that calibration file from the website you recommended. BTW, thanks for that!
No problem, just don't let the screen freeze on anything. I can tell the LCD tvs and the plasmas apart from 30 feet away. Some people don't see the blockiness of an LCD and some people see tons of phosphor trails in the plasmas. I like the plasmas better and read AVS forum top to bottom before I bought one. All the new HD tvs are badass, if I were a hardcore gamer I would buy an LCD no doubt.
Congrats on your new monitor ABM! Sounds nice. I am about to get a new LCD in the next few days. Samsung or Sony though. We'll see.
