Koufos would actually be a pretty decent option for us, and Hickson's value is probably a touch higher. If Denver has any inclination to do a Koufos for Hickson deal, that would be worth consideration.

Well that is the one player I doubt Denver gives up. I mean he is a damn rookie and he's cheap for them. With his type of production, they won't want to give him up; especially since he is defensive minded and Denver already has all their offense they need.

Koufos for Hickson? You're outta UR mutherfuckin mind! I'm sure UVE considered a bunch of fancy cap situations but JJ is by far the better player. It's not even close!

I don't think he's a rook mags, didn't he play for Utah for a few years? He's startin to look better but there's no way in hell I trade him for Hickson, that would be horrrible

Better player can be argued because the question remains on what type of player you get in return. Koufos is defensive minded and can still finish around the rim. He can't command doubles yet, but he can definitely rebound, defend and block shots. That's something I would definitely trade Hickson for.

But the reality is Denver would never give him up. He is young and one of the few bright futures of their team.

I'm a beavers fan, and a ducks fan when they aren't playing OSU or Wisconsin. I'm sorry I flipped out, I just really hate when people don't spell out words they know how to spell. If you someone is bad at spelling, no big deal.

My mistake and you're right. :P But he is still young and a damn good defender.

Regardless, I still want Hickson. I think his work ethic as a big is contagious. Our other players are starting to hustle even more.

Sorry for the dig, but I always snicker when someone is grammer or spelling police and they explain screwing up grammer or spelling. This is why I don't correct. I am God awful at both.

Koufos is in his 5th Season. Drafted originally by Utah.

Because his contract is nearly same as Hickson ($3M vs $4M) and for only two more years after this, a deal would make sense for PDX. KK's contract would count only as $3M on the books (instead of JJ's $7.6M cap hold) and allow us cap room for signing up to $9M yr player. Be creative Portland!!!

Still need Hickson to agree before the deal is made. I just don't see him accepting it. Also, I think Denver would need some more talent in exchange; just in case Hickson decides to bolt.

Interesting discussion. Here's my bottom line:

I don't want JJ to be our starting center next year.

I'm happy to re-sign him as our backup PF/C. The team rebounds better when he's not on the floor, but he's playing out of position, and he's playing predominately against starters. I think that will change, perhaps even dramatically, if he was our backup PF.

One poster thinks JJ is looking for a monster contract. I'm not sure if this is right. If I was JJ, I'd be looking for a LONG TERM contract, like 5 years guaranteed. I'd be interested in a 5 year, 35 mil contract - not interested at all in a 4 year, $40 mil contract.

Truthfully, I don't think JJ's problem is JJ, it's Leonard. Leonard is not starting material right now and may never be. While he is an athletic freak, Leonard is not really a basketball player. If Leonard were starting, the team would have a better rebounding rate with JJ on the floor than off.

If JJ wants a 5 year deal then he has to get it from us. Can't from any other team. Thing is I don't think he gets it from us either (edit because I don't think we can even offer it. Can only offer 5 years to 1 player and they have to be multiple All-Star or league MVP). 4 years sure.

From Wikipedia (but only for Rookies coming off deals): Under the 2011 CBA, maximum salaries, as expressed as a percentage of the cap, remained mostly unchanged. However, a player coming off his rookie scale contract is eligible to sign for 30% of the cap if he was voted to start in two All-Star Games, was named to an All-NBA Team twice, or was named MVP. This was dubbed the "Derrick Rose Rule" after the 2011 MVP.[10] In addition, newly signed contracts now have a maximum duration of five years for players with Bird rights and four years for all other players (including sign-and-trade acquisitions).[5] Every team is allowed one "designated player" who receives a five-year maximum extension on his rookie scale contract.[11]

For non-rookie deals, it is 4 years according to me reading but need to find a good link.
