Oh I wholeheartedly agree and would do this trade in a nano-second. The version I prefer is Rudy + Blake and Outlaw is a great trade for Portland. We consolidate and free up playing time for Bayless to see what we have there. PG Miller/Bayless/Roy SG Roy/Bayless SF Butler/Batum/Roy PF LMA/Howard/Cunningham C Oden/Joel delicious! My only concern is having enough shots and range in the 1st unit.
I'm a little concerned about the drop-off in terms of his intensity on D, but I also tend to think that a change of scenery might be just what he needs to reinvigorate his game. He's enough of a playmaker and "point forward" that I'd probably even consider trading Miller and one other guy for him after the December 15th deadline on trading signed free agents expires. Brandon gets to keep his security blanket, Caron becomes a guy who can help create a little in the half court when needed, can score at a pretty good rate when he's on and can make this team a little bit tougher. I think there are some concerns and the move is not without risk, but I think this is the kind of "championship piece" type move that KP kept rattling on and on about over the past couple of years. The big "If" is whether or not the Wiz are interested in what we're selling. http://www.realgm.com/src_checktrade.php?tradeid=5290090
To get value, you have to be willing to relinquish it. I don't know, I think he's worth it. He's only 29 and has a few years left in the tank. http://www.nba.com/playerfile/caron_butler/index.html
One thing I would like to bring up about Butler that a lot of folks seem to miss. Butler averages a lot of assists for a SF type. A couple of seasons he has averaged almost 5 assist.
Miller Roy Butler Aldridge Oden Bayless Webster Cunningham Howard Przybilla Mills Pedergraph Plenty of Minutes for our Top 8 players, which is WHAT WE NEED!
For those that know Butler. Does he need the ball in his hands as well? Or will he play off the ball?
What good does it do to have 3 SG if they can't get the time on the court, when we have no SF worth a fuck?
You have heard of the 3 guard offense, but have you heard of the 3 SF offense? Charlotte v. Miami monday night: Jackson 45 mins, Wallace 46 mins, Diaw 44 mins. Will Brown use these 3 that much together all season?
He can do both, but I would say he needs to at least handle the ball some in order to get into a rhythm. He's completely sucking nuts in Flip's offense that has him acting almost exclusively as a spot up shooter since Arenas is handling the ball on something like 90-95% of the time he's in there. The thing that wouldn't worry me too much is that he's perfectly comfortable shooting off the dribble much like Travis and thus could be capable of filling that role late in the clock or at the end of games.
Two expiring contracts. Rudy Fernandez might be enough to get it done. I don't know how did Steve Blake enjoy his time in Washington when he was there? If the Wizards acquire him, they could play him at the point or two with Arenas.
Butler for Fernandez + Blake + Outlaw would be fine. ^^^ I would do this one. EASILY. Miller\Bayless Roy\Webster Butler\Batum LMA\Howard\Dante Oden\Joel Wow... what a team!!!!! That would be amazing!!!
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/wizardsinsider/2009/11/butler-optimistic-that-things.html Here's an interesting article on Butler's struggles so far this season. It might provide some context for the conversation here.
Yes, yes, a thousand times yes. I would feel bad giving up Rudy but you are going to have to give up quality to get quality. Our backup shooting guard for a legitimate 3 is a deal that Portland would absolutely have to do.
I'd give up Rudy and Joel if we could move Howard to the back up C, But I don't think the man has enough gas left in the tank.
I'd trade Rudy to get a true SF solution. Rudy at best seems to be just a spark off the bench with his frail frame. I couldn't see him being effective for 30+ minutes a game. Plus his natural position is the same as Roy and he'll never get enough burn in Portland for him to resign here.
