How aren’t they similar? Out of town guy buys team City needs a new arena I’m not being ridiculous here. I love that he reached out to Ron Wyden. I love that reports say he’s keeping the in Portland, I love that the city and state have said they are all in. Now let’s just see what happens
Key arena was a dump. The city didn't just spend a ton of money building Safeco and the stadium the Seahawks play in, the guy who bought the Sonics didn't have the track record of buying a team and *keeping* it in the market it was already in, there wasn't a group already formed *before* the team was sold making a point of saying they want to keep the team there, the NBA didn't go out of their way to keep two teams in their home towns (Sacramento and Clippers), and the group that bought the Sonics did not have a local connection to the city. And it'd not like Dallas can have a 2nd team there, nor was Raleigh the temp home of an NBA team, showing they are willing and able to host a team, nor is this ownership group best buddies with the commissioner. So acting like the two scenarios are the same is intellectually dishonest.
Those are the only two things. You completely ignored my post. You really think the nba is gonna leave the nw market untapped??? You are ignoring all the other signs that say no to a move and pushing two small points. Moda is worlds better than the key arena was.
Who and how would that even be enforced? I doubt the NBA and owners would agree to something like that? If that were a condition of sale by the PA Trust, I'm not sure if they would have legal standing to do anything if that condition were broken. What happens when PA's assets are finally sold and the trust is dissolved?
My understanding is it is an agreement with the sale and with the league which has to grant approval by the board of governors and a move would also have to be approved by those who approve the agreement.
The board of governors already has to approve any team move. I just don't see how such a condition is enforceable.
Vegas, Seattle, Austin, Raleigh. Some are bigger, some are better. I am on no way saying this will happen, I’m saying until the people of Oregon and or Portland show they are willing to pay for an arena, there is a good chance they move. If the people support more taxes then they’ll stay. History shows people in Portland won’t support it
Yeah, in the sense that both teams are in the NBA. Other than that, they're not similar. The people who bought the Sonics didn't own another smaller market franchise that they kept in that city despite there being "better" markets for the NHL. The people who bought the Sonics didn't have someone in their group from Seattle. Swear to god, the Blazers ownership groups could sign a binding contract to stay in Portland for 50 years, and people here would still be convinced the team would be moving.
I think our new owner will use city and state money to improve the Moda and use his money to develop and improve the area in and around the Rose Quarter. It's what he did with the Hurricanes, and I think it makes the most sense for Portland. Also by helping him invest and improve the area around the Moda keeps him literally invested in Portland.
