This was my exact concern though... Many people assumed any coach would yield better results than Stotts. I personally thought it wasn't likely we would end up with someone significantly better than Stotts because of the person in charge of the coaching hire and the state of the franchise.

I'm not sure Billups is significantly worse than Stotts. So far, there is no way anyone can say he's significantly better.

Billups season will start after trades, imo. So far he plays with half team. If Blazers complete a team of guys that want to play for him, we can see what his coaching is.

Not gonna bash Chauncey Billups yet. He has not been good by any measure. But I'm going to support him for at least a season unless there is a major problem that demands a firing.

No i was not really a big fan of the hiring. I felt they should have gone with a more experienced coach while Dame was in his prime. In my opinion this coaching hire was a risk.

I still support Billups 100%. Hopefully, We will come out of this better, although the change may have happened too late. Maybe part of it will be because he demands changes in the roster. Sometimes I wonder if Stotts made rational choices by just keeping it simple for these guys. But over the long run those choices were detrimental to the team.
Talking about roster vs coaching. Even though Mark Few is a great coach, I have noticed that he only recruits really smart players who already know how to play the game, make the right decisions.

I think this is the most reasonable position: Give Billups a better team than Stotts had and you'll see better results than Stotts had. In the meantime, coaching the same crap that Stotts had (plus Nance, who's one extra solid player), Billups looks bad.

I think Olshey never did Stotts any favors when it came to the roster, and he definitely didn't do Billups any favors either.

Should've signed a big man (at least one more) and a PF, instead of 19 pgs.

19 PGs but not one decent backup PG.

I think Billups could be a good developmental coach--a teacher. The big issue I'm seeing with him as a head coach is ideological rigidity. It seems like in his mind, there's a Right Way to play basketball and his team will play that way, whether that lines up with the actual abilities of his players or not, regardless of the results. That kind of head coach can succeed, if he has a GM that can get him a roster of exactly the right type of players for his style. But since it's very hard to build exactly the roster you want, that type of coach is also pretty limited and usually won't be too successful.

Obviously, the best coaches are capable to adjusting their vision to the players that they have. There isn't one right way, there's a number of ways to succeed and finding the way that fits your personnel is the true job of the head coach, in my opinion.

Now, obviously, Billups is new at this. Maybe his rigidity is just a first-time coach thinking he has the one true answer and that'll ease once he realizes you can't really have sustainable success thinking like that. Maybe he'll become more flexible in his thinking over time. That's definitely the hope.

I was in favor of giving Billups a chance to be the head coach of the Blazers. I haven't changed my mind about that.

There's been much talk of wasting Dame's prime, not trading CJ, not swinging for the fences, not surrounding Dame with the right players, etc etc. But what about where we find ourselves with a first-year coach who thus far has proven only that he can't make in-game adjustments and has allegedly alienated his players? The lack of experience shows, and while sure we'll be patient, how long does Dame have? And why this love for Billups? Because of his days in Detroit? Because he said stuff on ESPN? Because he got a tutorial from Tyronn Lue? Maybe he'll be great someday, but right now dude is wasting Dame's prime.

Maybe he hasn't gotten enough of a chance yet? Okay sure, but what has he done to deserve this leniency? Aren't we in a win-now situation? Is there no disgust around here after watching our blitz scheme on the pick and roll fail over and over and over, last night allowing CP3 to find Ayton repeatedly for easy lay-ups and dunks? What about after he played the clearly grimacing and injured Dame 47 minutes...in a loss?

Where is the outrage? I notice many blame the players for not trying hard enough or what have you, as if once they fall in line, Billups' vision will come to fruition. Sounds ridiculous, but this seems to be people's thinking. Except, Billups admittedly doesn't know what he's doing, and as we watch him fumble and bumble away the season--by far the worst I've seen with Dame on the team--Dame, CJ, everyone gets another year older. It's a fucked up situation.

He's got Scotty Brooks a veteran coach on the bench, I wonder if he taps into any of his expertise or is he there, primarily for, I'll lean on him when i feel I need too / game management teacher?
Brooks has coached super stars, young & older players at a high level too.

Kind of my point. No one wants Scotty Brooks coaching the Blazers as we reach the peak of Dame's career and eye the decline ahead. Besides, how's it working out having such an experienced coach in Billups' corner?

I got it. I think about something else tho. Ladies don't want to play for Billups, but they loved playing for Stotts.
And I got enough of watching ladies.
    Stotts didn't mind.

As far as I remember, our best scorers had happy days under Stotts. I don't think they are so happy now.

I might be wrong about Stotts and Billups. It could be all attached to one thing only: Lillard wasn't Olshey's draft, but CJ was.

You're completely ignoring the fact that Dame hasn't been Dame in all of your commentary about Chauncey. Of course Chauncey as a first year head coach is going to have a learning curve but our record has been hurt far more by Dame's inability to shoot and move than it has by Chauncey's coaching. We can't judge Chauncey versus Stotts unless Dame starts making the shots he made while being coached by Stotts. Neither Stotts or Chauncey are to be blamed for this mismatched roster that makes no sense.

So Joe and Chauncey have been talking and if there is any semblance of direction in this organization we should see trades made to make this roster work by the deadline and then if we still suck, it would be reasonable to start to question if Chauncey is going to be a good coach for our team. Until then you're being unreasonable with your criticism.

I was complaining about this in the blowout win over Phoenix in October. Drove me crazy how often and how easily the opposing center found himself unopposed at the rim. Still drives me nuts. Is it the scheme or the execution? Or both? Either way, it's maddening that it's even worse now than 2 months ago.

Unreasonable? Have you been watching? Besides, you could just as easily argue that Dame's funk, and CJ's, and Roco's, etc has a lot to do with Chauncey forcing this round team into a square hole.

But you are missing my point: as we watch Dame begin to deteriorate, we are forced to live through having a coach with zero experience. This makes no sense. Chauncey might be great someday. Neat-o. But that just doesn't help us now, does it?

(And all this roster talk. ffs. Of course there are many causes/reasons for where we are, but a rigid, inexperienced, mismanaging coach is clearly one of them. And again, my point is, why? Why are we doing this to ourselves? Dame doesn't deserve these growing pains and neither do the fans.)

I think it's very true that when Portland played like this in the past, many posters blamed Stotts. But this season, those same posters are blaming the players for "lack of effort" and other things. Billups is getting a pass from many. Now, a first time coach probably deserves a certain level of 'pass' for failures & mistakes. But it's certainly valid to wonder if a first time coach should have been in charge in the season that sure appears to be determining the future course of the team. The failures and mistakes of coaching are magnified
