Impressive Stuttgart Beat Werder

VfB Stuttgart 4-1 Werder Bremen

After scoring five in each of their previous two league games, Werder Bremen were stopped in their tracks by an impressive Stuttgart side, who ran out 4-1 winners at the Mercedes Benz Arena.

Two goals in the first half from Sami Khedira and impressive debutant Christian Träsch put the Swabians in control and they built upon that with a third in the second half via Roberto Hilbert.

Brazilian Diego did pull one back with a superbly dispatched free kick, but it wasn’t enough to get themselves back in the game. Substitute Martin Lanig put the icing on the cake with a fourth on 88 minutes.

First Half

The opening minutes of the game were a little bitty with both sides failing to settle. Misplaced passes were a common place. Werder were the first to find some rhythm, but were not really a danger going forward.

On seven minutes Boka curled over a free kick from the right into the penalty area where Roberto Hilbert was rather surprised when the ball came his way and failed to control. A minute later Khedira headed a corner straight at Tim Wiese as the home side started to find their way.

Soon after, a good piece of combination play saw Sami Khedira free inside the area but Frings got back well to clear the danger. The home side had taken control of the game and were pushing Werder further and further back into their own half.

On the quarter hour mark Stuttgart debutant Träsch stormed down the right and sent in a superb cross towards Mario Gomez that the German international narrowly failed to convert under pressure from Prödl and Wiese.

Three minutes later though and the Swabian pressure paid off with the opening goal. A pass of great vision from Cacau sent Khedira through. The German U-21 midfielder rounded Tim Wiese well before steering the ball in from a tight angle.

Werder looked to come back via Markus Rosenberg, but Stuttgart keeper Jens Lehmann rushed out to clear after a long ball through from Baumann. Werder were becoming more engaged, but Stuttgart were content to hit them on the counter in their own stadium.

However, just before the half an hour mark the home side doubled their lead. Petri Pasanen headed out a corner from Boka, but the ball fell to the impressive Träsch outside the area, who reacted with an instant volley that flew like a rocket into the top corner.

Six minutes before the interval, the home defence gambled on the offside trap and lost. Swede Markus Rosenberg advanced on Jens Lehmann’s goal and unluckily saw his lob over the VfB keeper bounced just wide.

Second Half

Thomas Schaaf made a double substitution at half time with Sanogo and Hunt coming on for Baumann and Pizarro to give the side a slightly more attacking look.

It was the home side however who started the quicker with Roberto Hilbert crossing well from the right and Mario Gomez was a split second late to the ball and the danger passed.

On 51 minutes Hitzlsperger flashed a cross in from the left which saw Tasci stealing a march on Rosenberg before heading just wide. Minutes later, Gomez fed Brazilian Cacau only for the VfB forward to shoot just over the bar.

It continued to be the home side that looked the more dangerous and Mario Gomez missed a gilt edged chance on 57 minutes after a through pass from Cacau had split the Werder defence and put a chance on a plate for Super Mario.

On 63 minutes the second half pressure paid off with a third goal for Armin Veh’s side. A superb long throw from Jens Lehmann found Christian Träsch on the half way line and the impressive youngster sent across a low cross which was missed by Gomez, but not Roberto Hilbert. The midfielder kept his cool to slot in VfB’s third of the afternoon.

Two minutes later though and Diego kept up his good early season scoring form with a goal. It predictably arrived via a direct free kick, that the Brazilian curled sublimely over the Stuttgart wall leaving Lehmann absolutely no chance.

However, the icing was put on the cake two minutes from time when substitute Martin Lanig latched onto a superb pass from Hilbert and left both Naldo and Pasanen standing before coolly slotting home.

Yeah, he is a good goalkeeper, but just not good enough for a top four English team.

Yeah, you could be right, but Wenger can be tough at times though. And you know Germans don't like taking directions from the French. haha
