Sources familiar with Cleveland Indians outfielder Michael Brantley’s shoulder surgery suggest they believe it is quite serious, and that he could in fact miss significant time next season.

Word based on those sources is that “they had to re-anchor the muscle to the bone.”

Brantley, who had the surgery a month ago, has been hopeful to return at full strength next spring, and the Indians still say they have been given a timetable of four months for this type of injury/surgery.

“Nothing new on Michael,” Indians baseball president Chris Antonetti said by text. “He underwent biceps tenodesis surgery with an expected recovery time of four months.”

They were similarly hopeful this year, but Brantley wound up missing most of the season with shoulder issues. He played only 10 games this year. He had nine hits and three walks in 43 plate appearances.

A seventh-round pick in in the 2005 draft, Brantley broke out in 2014 with an All-Star season. He hit .327 with a .385 on-base percentage to go along with 20 home runs, 23 stolen bases and 45 doubles. He followed that up in 2015 with 45 doubles again and a .310 batting average and .379 OBP.
