Lousy GM. His legacy will be that he held onto guys way longer than he should’ve, causing their value to plummet.
I think the easiest way to decide is to answer the question "Will Joe GM again"? I think the answer is pretty clear.
Most teams don't go with an established GM, so I know you mean it as a dig, but look around the league, there's 6 GMs who were a GM at a different spot beforehand. Not a lot of retreads in front offices these days.
I think once Joe is fired he could GM again. The things is I think he would be a good GM under a very controlling President of Basketball Operations. I don't think he'll be the last word on a team's roster ever again but he's good with the media and can obviously take marching orders. I don't doubt that he has some good ideas too, I just think he needs a better basketball mind above him reining in the bad ideas and maybe even refining the good ones.
Your effectively saying Joe could be an assistant GM then same as he was for a decade under Neil. Its completely different if you are a GM reporting to the owner and the top decision maker for basketball operations - vs someone with a "GM" title that has one or two levels of bosses running the basketball operations and they report to the owner.
I think Joe is fine. I don't think he's been in a situation where he was free to build the team that he wants. I think there's been too much meddling from the top.
After posting this a while ago I still feel the same. The wins and Losses still are not much to behold. Adding Dame doesn't change that. The Blazers again this year will probably not make the playoffs and will be sitting with a very late lotto pick.
