I never saw Petrie play. But I'm having a hard time believing he would've hit the equivalent of 10 threes in the games where he scored 51 points.

Did his game really rely on hitting shots from 23 feet out or more?

That debate was over once Dame went 0.9 all over the Rockets to win that playoff series.

I'm down on Roy for demanding a max type contract when he was injured and negotiated through the press.

That being said, I think we have to give Roy his due. Roy always had vets and their egos to deal with. Lillard has been unleashed since those egos are gone. Obviously, Roy had injury problems to deal with, too. Roy also never had Stotts, and yes, I think that's a big deal. Lillard is actually in a very unique situation. Kudos to him for recognizing that and embracing it.

The Greatest Blazer has to come from a list of: Petrie, Wicks, Walton, Lucas, Thompson, Paxson, Bates, Drexler, Porter, Kersey, Strickland, Wallace, Sabonis, Roy, Aldridge and Lillard. Sixteen players!

For me, my favorite is still Porter for all he did despite not being the most athletic on the court! Lillard is fast approaching!

There's other rule changes too; the way fouls were shot (1+1 instead of 2) might pump up a few Petrie games too if they were played today

I saw Petrie play more times than I can count, both on TV and live. I can unequivocally say, with any doubt whatsoever that Petrie could hit from 23'....and 24'....and 25' almost with his eyes closed. That guy was Kyle Korver on steroids. His stroke was fundamentally excellent. His shootouts against guys like Bobby Love, Chet Walker, and yes, even my beloved Jerry West (the only Laker ever worth a shit) were epic. I'd give a lot to see the young Petrie go up against Curry. It would certainly be entertaining.....so long as Petrie wasn't the guy who had to defend Curry......

I clarified my post. I think Petrie could bust 60 as a 24-year old today, for sure.

No, his game hardly relied on hitting shots from 23' or more. The guy was combinations skills that made him an unstoppable offensive player. He could goto the rim, smooth as silk, hide the ball on the way in, then pull it off his arse for lay in. He was the first and last to win the NBA's one on one contest (All Star game), not just besting the best, but beating them badly. I think Walt Frazier (Clyde) summed it up when asked if he would compete the following year, can't quite remember it exactly but, basically, he didn't want to play the chump in the Petrie show more than once.
The NBA didn't run that show again do to lack of willing participants.

The Blazer used the Gym at Lewis and Clark in the early years for a practice facility. I got the contract to maintain the Score board a couple years in that period, a few extra bucks and it gave me access to the gym anytime I wanted. I showed up for practice often. One time, I don't know exactly what got it started, but Petrie put on a demonstration, he took 10 shots from 25', drilled them all. I think some fool had bet him he couldn't do it, but I am not sure.

Good list except I can't agree with a few:

Wicks, as that guy was an ass, skills he had but he was more of detriment to a team than an asset. Almost the first act by Dr. Jack, told Stu Inman to move Wicks out. The Blazers were immediately better.

Wallace doesn't draw my ire as badly as Wicks, but that man was not the Blazer he should have been. Not on my list.

Strickland I should have listed myself, the Blazer PG, my favorite PG in Blazer colors.

Kersey is right there with Bobby Gross in my mind, the class of the Blazer Small forwards

I expected Aldridge to join this list damn near his whole time here, then his last performances here suggested, maybe not. Now it is for sure, if he makes a list it will be not as a Blazer.

Bates, I never saw the man play, I was just in other places when he was a Blazer.

Lillard might make the list, I hope so. He needs to stop chucking threes and find the man that can.

Petrie could flat shoot from downtown. The most beautiful jump shot you've ever seen. He demonstrated three point range when there was no three point shot. But since that shot wasn't worth the extra point, there was no reason to practice it and no reason to prioritize that shot over creating other easier shots.

Had there been the three point shot in Petrie's day, there is zero question he would have been the best three point shooter in the game, and every Curry comparison today would be to Geoff Petrie.

Petrie, Bobby Gross, Jerome, and Sabonis are to this day my favorite Blazers.

But Lillard is in the race. ;)
