There will always be someone willing to take that risk.

You overestimate people, especially in this economy.

If a team does offer that, so be it, we will probably match. But you make them do it in restricted free agency, you don't, like nik said, bid against yourself with an extension.

You wait and you may run the risk of having him wait another year until he is an un-restricted free agent. That would be a big oops IMO. Hey if you want to play hard ball with him, fine I get it. But there will be plenty of teams that will go after him if we leave the door open.

I don't know exactly what you offer him this summer, I am just saying take advantage of the bad situation and get him long term a lot cheaper, than if you wait.

I think you are severely overestimating Oden's value. A big that has missed over 70% of his first three seasons is not in line for a $10 million/Year contract. It's just too big of a risk. It's not playing hardball, it's realizing that you shouldn't overpay a player when 1.) He's a huge injury risk, and 2.) His value is low. You have to see him play well for a season before you sign him to an extension.

Besides, if you just think of it in normal terms, he hasn't done anything close to deserve that kind of money yet. I know he's the franchise center, but what kind of message would that send?
