Hey, I ran a business in a small market (Pacific NW) for years, and we needed to turn over every rock for new business that we could, as compared to East Coast (population) markets. If the elements didn't line up in the East one year their gross sales would go in the dump, as they counted on the planets lining up to produce. They never had to work hard to cultivate new business or keep existing accounts. They only focused low hanging markets and never niche market targeted. My Company took pride in working hard to keep existing accounts and in cultivating new accounts for growth. We couldn't afford all our eggs in one basket so we strived to be very good a nice marketing and SERVICE. Even when the economy was down service boomed. Neil has to mine for players in all ways, as he's not afforded the luxury of a big market dynamic. IMO, if he and Paul are on the same page they could become very good at finding players that could surprise and fit their plan/system. Bottom line is they could become much more creative in tapping into hidden talent.
I agree... If you are going to bring someone from a lower level competition league, at least bring a player ranked in to top 25-30 in that league... Vesely or someone like Nick Calathes I can get excited about... former NBA prospects that are the best players in their leagues right now... not some 28 year old scrub that has never dominated at any level
Exactly. San Antonio seems to find these guys too. The basketball world has expanded. Are there really only just 450 players in the world worthy of being in the NBA? or are there a few more out there that are just as good? We grabbed Wade Baldwin last year, now we need another...at SF. They are out there.
Anyone know anything about DeQuan Jones? 6'8", 220 lb, 28 year old SF playing for the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in the G-League. Shot .433 from '3' last year and can attack the basket.

More Dumpster Diving: Didn't the Blazers have Antonius Cleveland on their SL roster last year or the year before? While playing for the Santa Cruz Warriors last year, he shot .600 from the field and .545 from '3' in 25 mpg scoring 13.8 ppg. He only played in 6 games so a small sample size...but that is serious efficiency in the opportunity he got. He plays good defense, has some length and in the highlights, stuffs both Kawhi Leonard and Andrew Wiggins.
Nope, although his team is one of the top 5 in Europe, and won the Euroleague not so long ago. Ask Fez.

A month ago, when I said that Olshey never made trades to change personnel, you went through your businessowner diatribe to say that you value employees and oppose too much turnover. Now you use the same anecdotal evidence to justify the opposite conclusion, that Olshey should try new players. You reversed the direction of your logic, but your goal remained the same--to back up Olshey, whatever he does.

Filling out the back of the roster trying to find value and making trades are not the same thing. Seems reasonable one might want the core “big name” players to stay consistent while wanting to find value at the end of the bench. My opinion is there is a lot to dislike about NO, but bringing in guys to work out for spot 15 on the roster is a petty thing to be upset about. There are people who seem legitimately frustrated he gave the guy a work out, he didn’t sign him yet, didn’t put him on the SL, he had him work out.... Maybe if we want to talk about how crappy NO is we can point to one of the ones that matter. We could make a list. It’s not hard. Heh.

(As a degreed accountant with 30 years experience, I've run businesses for a couple months at a time, while the owner takes off for Hawaii because of my competence, but I don't type post after post about it.) No idea how good this guy is, but I'm all for giving him an SL invite. But more so than anything, it's nice to see Olshey and Co. showing some more creativity in how they can possibly fill out the roster.
I don't think they would give him a private workout just to put him on the SL team where everyone else could evaluate him and then try to sign him. I think the idea is to see him in private and make the decision to sign him quickly....or not at all.
