Should we trade for Jerami Grant?

  1. Yes, he's a very good player, and I provide evidence below

    12.8%
  2. Sure if it's not for much - I wouldn't give up the Pelicans' first rounder though

    54.7%
  3. No, he's overpaid and inefficient

    29.1%
  4. Other (explain)

    3.5%

On the Knicks forum, they're talking about Bledsoe + NOP pick for Randle as an idea they'd serious consider.

How do you guys feel about that?

I've always liked Randall. Yes he has some flaws in his game but the guy plays to win and is tough as they come.

That would almost completely redeem the two trade deadline deals.

If at consummation the deals had been CJ/Norm/Nance/RoCo out, Randle/Hart/Winslow/Keon/Didi/20M TPE in, there would have been a ton less complaining.

For the same package and from a basketball standpoint, I'd rather have Randle.

No way. I'd rather have Jerami Grant.
Edit: He reminds me of the Bonzi Wells experience. He can be great but also toxic and a coach killer.
I don't know why the Trail Blazers would want some guy that has some mental problems with his game.

theyre similar in scoring, although grant is little more efficient (fg% & 3pt%), while randle is better rebounder and passer

but defense matters a lot, especially when you have dame-ant backcourt, so grant makes more sense than randle and we dont need randles passing with dame, ant & nurk, rebounding would be nice, but it is what it is

i'm just looking at basketball fit. depends on how the lotto turns out, but i think randle can work next to Nurk, as well as a backup 5.

No argument here. I'm just saying that in addition to working well on our team, it would also be an excellent return on assets which can be tied directly back to those deals.

I like his passing, but also see him, like you, as a 4/small 5. I like grants ability to better defend at the 3 and 4 for our team over randle.

Do we believe that Grant would be acquirable for the package indicated as Randle's acquisition cost? Is Grant's (debatably) better fit worth the expected difference in acquisition cost?

Separately, might it theoretically be possible to get both? If so, would we want to?

    If this is the breakdown:

Door 1: TPE + NO pick for Grant
Door 2: Bledsoe + NO pick for Randle

I take door 2 and don't look back.

Higher risk (because of the length of his contract) but higher reward IMO. We need his scoring from that position.

How does the 15% trade kicker affect us?

I agree that defense matters a lot, but I would not consider them similar in scoring. Their stats might be similar, but there have been games in past years that I watched where Randle was unstoppable. No matter who was covering him. He attacked the basket over and over and either scored or was fouled. Very few power forwards can do that. Certainly not Grant. Having said that, I have not seen one game of his this year. Not sure what happened nor know why NY fans have turned on him. They loved him last year.

Would they take a 2025 Bucks pick?

There is plenty of room on Portland's trade-ravaged roster for Grant to eat alongside Lillard as he pleases.
    ---

Yeah, idk about that one jakey boy. I would run plays for Dame, Ant, Nurk, and probably Hart as well before Jerami. Shit, I'd also put the ball in Winslow and Ingles' hands before his. He is not a focal point. He doesn't score efficiently. He's a good role player who can defend and knock down open shots.

If our only plan with the Pelicans pick was to trade it for Jerami, as Fischer is suggesting, then it was a blessing in disguise. Giving up that pick and paying a glorified role player 100M+, no thanks.

In a word - yuck. If excess salary made CJ untenable, why chase a guy with an excessive salary + a high acquisition cost? Not to mention that he might expect to take over CJ's role in the offense. Does bringing in a decent role-player make this team a contender?

I keep thinking that anyone that is going to give up a productive player will want something that will bring immediate production in return. So when people mention a pick three drafts away, I tend to think that's unlikely to get it done.

If we're hellbent on Grant then I would hope we would just trade back with Charlotte or San Antonio for two first rounders, send the worse of the two to Detroit for Grant and still get a solid prospect.

Or, maybe Thibs is a player killer. Never seen such a wishy washy head coach with his minutes distribution from one night to another. Plus you can tell, he wears on guys.

Detroit needs to unload Grant, Period! I don't over pay for Grant. Nice role player, good teammate. If they want a draft pick, it's gonna be a future one, not this one.
