No, because he's a better all around player than Ant. Ant's a shooter, that's it. DeMar also gets to the line a lot. That's important. And DeRozan only makes 4 mil. more per. I doubt he'd be getting that much more on a future deal per season.
I like the thought of adding Derozan. He's said he wants to focus on improving his 3-point shooting this offseason, he's incredibly durable and his game has aged well, and other players (including Dame) love him. Also, Lonzo is out for next year so the Bulls may have an appetite for Ant. I feel like Ant's value should be equal or a little better than Derozan. It would be great to trade him and get our future pick back. If we did that and got a defensive back up 4/5, I could see us making some noise next year. Lillard/Scoot Thybulle/Sharpe/Scoot Derozan/Thybulle/Sharpe Grant/? Nurkic/? I'm wondering who we could get at 4/5 that would help us out, using future picks, Nas, and other assets. I wonder if the Lakers would be willing to let go of Vanderbilt (we would have a weakness shooting). Kevin Love could be a nice floor stretching value big. Brook Lopez would be amazing as a two-headed monster with Nurk (we'd be committing to drop coverage, but Thybulle makes that a little more viable).
They're saying Lonzo's career is most likely over. Sad for him. He worked hard to overcome some deficiencies , and was turning into a quality talent.
As I posted, he makes 3.5 free throws a game more than Ant. A little more context, every game last year he got to the line 7.1 times a game, making 6.2. He took 17.6 field goal attempts a game. Simons got to the line 2.9 times a game, making 2.6. He took 16.9 field goal attempts a game. That's 3.6 extra free throws made a game. Which is good... applying pressure and getting to the line is awesome. But from a three point shooting perspective, Ant just about makes up the difference. Of the 17.6 field goal attempts DeRozan took a game, he averaged 18.3 ppg (his scoring average of 24.5 less the 6.2 made free throws). Simons scored 18.5 ppg on his 16.9 field goal attempts (21.1 - 2.6). If we take that up to DeRozan's 17.6 attempts, it would scale up to 19.27 ppg. Even assuming he would draw no more free throws (which is possible, if unlikely) he's a more efficient scorer beyond getting to the line. Whether it's better to get more fouls against your opponent or to space the floor with your perimeter shooting prowess is unclear... both are good and part of the reason that someone like Dame (who can do both) is so amazing. I don't think DeRozan is a better defender. I don't think he's a "better all around player than Ant". I think he's old and overrated and overpaid and I'm not eager to see his mid-range shoot-first ways in Portland.
Ant and Demar have around the same TS%. Demar is a better playmaker, but he's also older, and not really better on defense, so I don't see the point either.
"Joe can't get anything but bad offers, nothing he can do!" At what point do we question his ability to negotiate deals that are in his favor? Dude is lying through his teeth. His whole press conference was laughable.
We agree to disagree. DeMar is a quality starter, and IMO the best player on Chicago. LaVine has flashes, but i feel like DeMar is more consistent. Ant is just a shooter. A very good 3 pt. shooter.
I will give him the benefit of the doubt on the #3 pick for a star vet. But he better add some quality veterans in the next few weeks via FA and trades to strengthen the starting lineup.
How can you not be happy with a decade long future of Scoot/Sharpe? You want to mortgage the future to build around a 33 year old so we can compete for 6-8 seed for 3 years, then start from scratch with nothing? Dame has made almost half a billion dollars, and won us nothing, and people keep saying we owe him. Sorry man, I care more about the team than one single player. You need to take emotion out of it and think logically. We now have probably the most talented, explosive, exciting back court for the next 10 years. No trade would get this team a title in the next 3 years.
There you go again with that stupid ass "Mortgage the future" thing. WTF? And Sharpe and Scoot aren't a guaranty to be All Stars, or still be in Portland in 10 years.
There's was another article about his defensive issues in San Antonio. You're the first person I've ever seen call him one of the better wing defenders in the league. Maybe you're right, but I've always viewed him as a negative defender and I think it's got worse.
Could be... I don't know what the offers were. I can't say he turned down good offers or passed up bad ones. The reality is no trade was made. The roster is small, inexperienced, but has some young potential. Those angry with Cronin/Billups can feel confident neither will be around to see the youth hit their potential. I hope hope hope we can thread the needle of Scoot/Sharpe being stars and we can hold onto them into their prime.
Because we just had almost a decade of Dame/CJ & Dame/Ant, never had a legitimate chance, and it's unlikely Scoot or Sharpe ever become as good as Dame became. You need to think logically, because you're dreams of pure optimism regarding players who have proven nothing aren't it. Plus, blatantly lying to Dame and the fans while running him out of town without much of a plan is fucking ridiculous. They could've handled that much better if that was their plan. I dont want many more years of losing. Sounds miserable. Getting Dame another legit star gives the Blazers a chance at much more than a 6-8 seed. But instead we hope to replicate that result 3-4 years from now. Yay.
