If someone can give me what reparations there should be, and how they came up with that number or items, I'd appreciate it.
Interesting question. I await the answer with you. However, I fear we will wait some more for cogent answer.
I think we'd all appreciate that. But it's not that simple and it needs to be a solution that is iterated on after a long and mature national discussion. Of course, no reparation will ever undo the damage done but the effort would say something about our care for those who have been devastated by American slavery.
Are the British involved in reparations because slavery started in the British colony of Jamestown VA? The Dutch? They brought 20 slaves to the British colony of Jamestown, VA. Should anyone whose ancestors fought for the north in the civil war pay reparations? IMHO, those families who had people die fighting against slavery have been devastated by American slavery as well. I'm not being a smart ass here.
Reparations shouldn't be needed, but I can see that it may be the only solution that some can come up with since America's racism is so long standing, and somehow most people still can't see it because we "hide" it in plain sight with policies that work against black people. Personally if America would just let Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream come true for all Americans, reparations wouldn't be needed at all. Problem is too many in our American congress have forgotten all about the Constitution of the United States of America. It begins with: We the People of the United States. Not we the few, we the rich, we the corporations... As long as our congress is actively working against Americans, "We the People" will never become a reality here in America.
Britain just finished paying reparations. They paid reparations for 182 years. They paid those reparations to the owners and descendants who had to give up their slaves. https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/taxpayers-still-paying-british-slave-12019829
Damn cheap too compared to the American Civil war. Lincoln should have followed the lead, instead of starting a war. https://www.britannica.com/topic/Slavery-Abolition-Act AT the start of the civil war, there were just over 3 million slaves in the US, owned by some 100,000 people in the population of 33 million. So if Britian freed 800,000 slaves for 20 million pounds, the 80 million should have freed 3.2 million in the US. 80 million pounds was about 400 million dollars in that era. Very cheap compared to a war that cost a million lives and a cost in dollars in the billions. Lincolns government during the war, was the first nation every to exceed a budget of 1 billion dollars a year, most of which was to pay for the war.
Bottom line: America paid... $1.6 B - Japanese $32 M - Ottawas of MI $31 M - Chippewas of WI $12.3 M - Seminoles of FL $105 M - Sioux of SD $81 M - Klamaths of OR $1 B/44 M Acres- Alaska Natives $0 - African American Descendants of Slaves Why are reparations “controversial?“
Of COURSE you would advocate that we PAY the SLAVE OWNERS... Please just avoid any discourse with me... I.. just can't...
I like it! Great idea! We should just force all gun owners to give up their guns in exchange for reparations. Because according to your logic you would totally do it.
Rather than point out all of the policies, I think that it would be best if people go do an internet search on... Structural Racism in America. There are plenty of articles to be read on the subject. Me debating over small examples of racism in America just won't cut it.
@dviss1 Perhaps reparations is what the Blacks expect to get by supporting the liberals year after year. They come up with some costly promises pandering for votes, but have you found one to list reparation right up front? Top priority over great give a ways, like free tuition for all, or annual income? Probably can't pander up enough votes with that one.
