Hoopshype: https://hoopshype.com/lists/nba-rumors-anfernee-simons-kevon-looney-gary-payton-ii-nerlens-noel/ Four NBA executives who spoke with HoopsHype believe Simons could land a four-year, $80-plus million deal in free agency with additional incentive clauses to increase his salary.
Yeah I think I'm fine with this. Of course I'd prefer the Blazers have more salary cap space if he was on a 5 years 70 million deal... but this avoids the $130 million max offer scenario.
It could....nothing is guaranteed, except the money in an NBA contract. It could also save the franchise from disaster contracts like what happened before. Not one of those deals Neal handed out was worth it's weight in paper. I think Ant is better and more talented than any of those previous players, most of whom aren't even in the league anymore. But it is a very small sample size over a 4 year career. There are contributing factors to that, but the results are what they are. And he will not be in the same place to succeed this coming year. He won't be the main focus, won't be playing the same position, and will have to defend even bigger players.
risking Ant becoming becoming a UFA in 2 yrs right as he's entering his prime would be foolish IMO. And besides, at least 3 other teams would easily offer him a better deal if that's what we're putting out there. don't forget also that we benched him this year right as he was gaining steam to be the MIP. He's not sitting out and passing up a chance at that award for a contract that isn't higher than expectations.
i just cant see simons not getting 5 year contract, young, up & coming player, you dont offer them less, but more years
If you just gave him a 3 year contract I can understand some of that. But giving him a player option after year 2 doesn't make it a contract without downside for the Blazers. Lets say Ant is horrible, well he is going to pickup that option so its still an overpaid 3 year contract. Probably better to just overpay him a bit more than you propose for 4 years, not have options, and then we are guaranteed to have him for double the time of 2 extra years. The downside is only one extra year if its a bad deal.
if he performs well, hell land even bigger contract after this one is up (or it could be extension like we did with dame & cj mccollum) hell be 28 yo at the time, no worries whatsoever if youre smart, youd take the most you can take right now, cause you never know what can happen in the future... one injury can ruin everything
5/$105m would honestly be a dream imo. I could see Simons outperforming that extension like Jaylen Brown has been able outplay his.
One thing I don't see him average 22 points game with healthy Dame. Contract he probably get is 4/80 but I see his worth 4/60. The reason I say this he as yet show he can be two way players and I don't see him averaging anything near what he average last year. You got Grant and Nurk and Dame and maybe Hart on the same floor as him. He might be the 4 or 5th option in that lineup. But we will see what happens.
