The two-time K-1 Hero's lightweight grand prix champion said last week on the Sherdog Radio Network's "Savage Dog Show" that he has been sidelined with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee. The American Top Team lightweight will undergo surgery as early as Friday in the United States and expects a three- to four-month layoff. Calvancante anticipates a return to Dream -- the collaborative promotional effort between Fight Entertainment Group and Pride's former staff -- by year's end. His downtime could be put to good use as a scouting period. The 24-year-old will be among the ringside spectators at Dream's lightweight grand prix finals on July 21 at the Osaka Castle Hall in Osaka, Japan. Caol Uno (Pictures), Tatsuya Kawajiri (Pictures) and Eddie Alvarez (Pictures) earned spots in the semifinals last Sunday in Saitama. Calvancante was unanimously eliminated from the 16-fighter field in his rematch against eccentric submission specialist Shinya Aoki (Pictures) on April 29. The heated pair had originally faced off in the tournament's opening round on March 15, but they stalemated in a no-contest ruling after Calvancante had delivered suspect blows to the back of his opponent's head. The Brazilian appeared to be leading the contest at its four-minute ceasefire, but he couldn't replicate his success for the duration of the April 29 rematch. "I kept doing the same game," Calvancante said. "I didn't change. The emotion took control, so I couldn't change in the fight. I wasn't that smart." Despite the loss, Calvancante was approached to advance in Aoki's stead for the May 11 quarterfinals when it appeared that the Paraestra Toyko rep would have to bow out with an eye injury. "When I got to the airport, they came behind us and asked," Calvancante said. "It [the next fight] was really close timing and the knee injury I'd had for a long time." Aoki has since reclaimed his spot in the race. He meets Katsuhiko Nagata (Pictures) at Dream 4 on June 15, and the victor will be awarded the final semifinal position in the July 21 conclusion.
