    What kind of bicycle does he have there? Something like this (below)? Looks like there are pegs on the axles.

    Pro athletes have contract clauses prohibiting them from participating in activities such as skydiving or extreme sports. He was probably messing around on his bike and had an accident. I can see him panicking and making up the story about the car.

    Hopefully, he didn't sign a police report and only gave statements.
