There were never any Stoudamire issues, strangely enough. Best Quick moment ever: him visiting Outlaw and sitting on fire ants.
Some people just like to hate on the local sports writer. I know some sport writers are annoying, but I never understood the issue people have with Quick. His "negative" articles came from the jailblazer era, when the team wasn't very good on or off the court. Of course a journalist is going to write about the stories that the team gives him.
Plus, going around hating on a sport writer....get a fucking life. If you don't like his articles don't read them. It's one thing to not like a player that you are forced to watch if you want to be a fan of the team, but why spend energy talking about a writer?
I really like the podcasts Quick used to do for Oregonlive, but he stopped for some reason. Probably because people kept heckling him.
He needs to shed his Oregonian past and start over again where no one knows him. I wish him well in Central America.
I've thought many times I wouldn't want to be a professional sports commentator. Thankless job and some portion of the fan base is always going to be ragging on you. It goes with the territory.
Poor guy, paid a couple hundred thou per year to watch games, hang around locker rooms sniffing for dirt, and then writing his quasi-religious opinions for hours per day like...ha ha, what loser would do that?
Does he make that much? Most of what i see is 70K tops. and that isn't in a small market like Portland. http://www.payscale.com/research/US/Job=Sports_Reporter/Salary
Why the hell would you respond to a critic publicly? I don't get it. Every single person who generates a form of entertainment has critics. Movies, music, television, painting... books...... they all have people who don't like their work. Some people loved the new Star Wars, some people didn't really care for it. If you're going to work in the entertainment industry, you HAVE to have thick skin. When you're talking about something like sports, where people are extremely emotional and passionate about their love for a team, there are always going to be people who react negatively to any kind of constructive criticism or something that they perceive to be negative towards the team. That just goes with the territory.
To be fair I have a long standing relationship with the O-Live boards. I pretty much have commented on there for the last 15 years and there is no writer that does not know my stance on things. My work is well enough known that he might have just felt it was time to put me in my place. Yes i have been critical of him for a while now.
And that's part of life as a writer. If he can't take criticism, he should write a in a diary and hide it under his pillow instead.
