Former North Carolina State point guard Dennis Smith Jr. will work out for the Knicks on Wednesday, according to a league source. Smith, who arrived in New York on Tuesday, also has plans to work out with the Celtics, Lakers and Sixers — the top three teams in the June 22 draft. However, many mock drafts have Smith falling to the Knicks at No. 8 because of Smith’s defensive shortcomings in the pick-and-roll, he is just two years removed from ACL surgery and he was unable to help improve N.C. State’s record (15-17) last season. “Has to work on his defense and floor leadership,’’ one NBA scout said. His coach at N.C. State, Marc Gottfried, predicted to The Post recently Smith won’t be there at No. 8, claiming Smith’s athleticism is on par with Russell Westbrook’s.
