<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Bryant arrived at the No. 8 for two reasons. It was the number he wore when he was a kid playing in Italy. It also tied into the number he wore at Adidas' ABCD Camp, 143. The numbers add up to 8.</div>LINKThats the article from ESPN.
I know Ive heard the ABCD camp one before on several occasions (the math works , I checked it with a calculator haha jp)..It could be both perhaps, I dont know, but I have heard more than once that it was originated from his ABCD camp number..

To answer your questions, it's both theories. Kobe got drafted and couldn't use his #33, his dad's number, so instead he chose 8 because it was his idol's number and it was his number at the ABCD camp combined.
This is reminiscent of Jordan changing his number. Bottom line, he'll be remembered as number 8 and I bet he returns to it, just like Jordan did with 23/45. I don't get the number change, but oh well.
Jordan's was weird..He had 45 to begin with but he wanted half of it for some reason which came out to 22.5..He rounded it up to 23 and it became his number..
